Famous Pakistani climber Murad Sadpara went missing after successfully reaching the top of Broad Peak. Sadpara, who is famous for his record-breaking climbs, fell after reaching the summit, and since then, there has been no contact with him.
Waliullah Falahi, the Deputy Commissioner of Shigar, confirmed that Sadpara fell shortly after summiting. This has led to a major search and rescue effort, with Army Aviation being called in to help. The search is challenging due to the high altitude, but efforts are underway to find and rescue Sadpara.
Fellow climber Naila Kiani has appealed on social media for urgent help. She asked the Pakistan Army to send a rescue team from Skardu to the Broad Peak crampon point, hoping they can quickly reach Sadpara. She voiced frustration over the slow response and used social media to draw attention to the situation.
Sadpara was part of a Pakistani team that recently found the body of a porter who had died on K2 a year ago. This shows their dedication to climbing and recovering lost climbers.
Broad Peak, located in the Gilgit-Baltistan region, is one of the 14 peaks in the world that rise above 8,000 meters. Though it’s considered one of the “safer” peaks at 8,047 meters (26,555 feet), climbing it is still very dangerous. This incident highlights the risks of high-altitude climbing, where even experienced climbers can face accidents.
Abid Sadpara, another mountaineer and Murad’s relative, has also shared his concerns on social media. He has asked people to pray for Murad and highlighted the difficulty of the rescue mission. His messages reflect the worry and hope as the climbing community unites to support Sadpara’s safe return.
Pakistan is home to five of the world’s 14 peaks above 8,000 meters, including K2 and Nanga Parbat. The remote Gilgit-Baltistan region, where Broad Peak is located, draws climbers from around the world. In 2023, over 8,900 foreign climbers visited this area during the summer climbing season, which lasts from early June to late August. The region’s peaks are among the most challenging and awe-inspiring for climbers.
As the search for Murad Sadpara continues, both the climbing community and the people of Pakistan remain hopeful for his safe return. The ongoing efforts and pleas for help highlight the strong support among climbers facing the extreme challenges of high-altitude climbing.
