Karachi is bracing for more heavy rain as the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) forecasts further downpours under the influence of an ongoing weather system. On Tuesday, the PMD predicted that the city would continue to experience rain, with breaks, throughout the day, potentially exacerbating the challenges faced by the metropolis during the monsoon season.
Current Weather Conditions
As of Tuesday, Karachi’s temperature stands at 27°C, with humidity levels soaring to 90%, creating a muggy atmosphere across the city. The maximum temperature is expected to rise to 34°C later in the day. Northwestern winds are currently sweeping through the city at a speed of 18 kilometers per hour, adding to the variable weather conditions that Karachi residents are experiencing.
Early Morning Showers and Affected Areas
The day began with early morning showers in various parts of Karachi, bringing temporary relief from the heat but also raising concerns about potential flooding. Several key areas, including Saddar, Shahra-e-Faisal, Gulistan-e-Jauhar, Landhi, Korangi, M.A Jinnah Road, Guru Mandir, Soldier Bazar, Liaquatabad, Nazimabad, Site Area, Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Jail Chowrangi, and Safoora Chowrangi, received significant rainfall. These showers, although sporadic, have caused water accumulation in some low-lying areas, disrupting traffic and daily activities.
Rainfall Statistics and Forecast
The PMD provided detailed statistics on the rainfall recorded in Karachi on Monday night. The highest amount of rain was recorded in Quaidabad, where 52 millimeters of rainfall was reported. This was followed by Gulshan-e-Hadeed, which received 42 millimeters of rain. Other areas saw varying levels of precipitation: North Karachi recorded 29.8 millimeters, Nazimabad 26 millimeters, and Surjani Town 25.4 millimeters. Keamari and Shahra-e-Faisal each received 16 millimeters, while University Road saw 15.6 millimeters of rainfall.
Further data shows that Korangi recorded 14.6 millimeters of rain, Saddar 13 millimeters, and the Old Airport area received 12.6 millimeters. Gulshan-e-Maymar and Jinnah Terminal recorded 12.4 and 11.2 millimeters, respectively. Bin Qasim and DHA both saw 11 millimeters of rain, Orangi Town 7 millimeters, and Mauripur received 4 millimeters. These figures highlight the widespread nature of the rainfall across Karachi, affecting both central and peripheral areas.
Government Preparedness and Response
In response to the heavy rainfall forecast, Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah has issued directives to all local bodies, district administrations, and the irrigation department to be on high alert. The CM emphasized the need for timely action to manage any emergencies that might arise due to the heavy rainfall. The government is particularly focused on ensuring that drainage systems are functioning effectively to prevent urban flooding, which has historically been a significant issue during the monsoon season.
Local authorities have been instructed to mobilize resources and coordinate with relevant agencies to address any waterlogging or other rain-related challenges that may occur. The provincial government is also monitoring the situation closely, with emergency teams on standby to respond to any incidents.
With the PMD predicting that the rain will continue in Karachi today with intermittent breaks, residents are advised to stay updated on weather conditions and take necessary precautions.
