Heavy Rain Continue to Drench Karachi, PMD Warns of Intensifying Monsoon System
The PMD Chief Meteorologist has emphasized that the peak of this monsoon spell is yet to be seen.
Karachi has been experiencing continuous rainfall since last night, with the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) predicting that the downpour will persist throughout the day. The ongoing rain is contributing to a pleasant, albeit waterlogged, atmosphere in the city. However, the PMD has warned that the current weather system could intensify, raising concerns about urban flooding and other disruptions.
Over the past 24 hours, the city has recorded significant rainfall, with the highest amount being 62 mm in Gulshan-e-Hadeed, followed by 44 mm in Bin Qasim, 29 mm in Qaidabad, 19 mm in Surjani, 18 mm in Korangi, and 17 mm on University Road. The PMD has noted that this weather system is expected to move into the Arabian Sea by the morning of August 29, potentially becoming more severe as it travels.
Once the system shifts southwest of Karachi, it is expected to bring strong winds and heavy rainfall to the city, with a high risk of severe flooding along the coast. The powerful monsoon winds are anticipated to cause stormy conditions across Sindh, with forecasts predicting between 150 to 200 mm of rain in Karachi and even higher totals of 300 to 400 mm in areas like Thatta and Badin.
In preparation for the continuing rains, the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has been taking proactive measures. PDMA Director General Syed Salman Shah confirmed that heavy machinery has been deployed in key locations to manage rainwater drainage and reduce inconvenience to the public.
