Gaza Influencer Mohammad Halimy Killed in Israeli Airstrike

Mohammad 'Medo' Halimy was struck by shrapnel from an Israeli missile in Khan Younis.

Mohammad ‘Medo’ Halimy, a 20-year-old Gaza influencer, has been killed in an Israeli airstrike. Known for his engaging content on Instagram and TikTok, Halimy had built a large following by showcasing daily life in Gaza. His videos offered a glimpse into the challenges of living in a conflict zone, from cooking with limited resources to creating content with minimal equipment.

On Monday, Halimy was struck by shrapnel from an Israeli missile in Khan Younis, according to youth organizations he had previously worked with. The Tamer Institute for Community Education reported that Halimy was in a sheltering area near the beach when the explosion occurred. Debris from the blast fatally injured him.

The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) have not confirmed a strike in Khan Younis on that day. However, they stated that they continue to target threats while trying to minimize harm to civilians in Gaza.

Halimy’s online presence grew significantly after his family was forced to flee their home due to Israeli military operations following the October 7 attacks. He amassed over 250,000 followers on Instagram and TikTok. His content ranged from simple cooking recipes to tutorials on how he produced his videos. Each video, he mentioned in an interview last year, cost him around $3—a substantial amount given Gaza’s economic conditions.

On Monday, just hours before his death, Halimy posted what would be his final video. In it, he showcased his tent and talked about his day’s activities. His followers, who had come to appreciate his candid portrayal of life under siege, had no idea it would be his last post.

The fatal strike occurred on a nearby street, with Halimy being injured by flying debris. He succumbed to his injuries the next day, according to the Palestinian organizations that confirmed his death.

Spark, a Gaza-based charity that had worked with Halimy in the summer of 2023, also confirmed his passing. They praised his ability to bring beauty and hope to difficult circumstances, noting that he had a unique way of adding charm to the most challenging situations.

Halimy’s sister, Rahaf, announced his death on Instagram. She expressed her grief, writing, “Muhammad, your kind spirit will remain with us, and we believe you deserve a better world. May God accept you as a martyr.”

Halimy’s death is a stark reminder of the dangers faced by those living in conflict zones, especially those who use social media to share their stories with the world. His content resonated with many, not just for its creativity but for the resilience it showcased in the face of adversity. His loss has left a void in the online community, and his followers mourn a voice that brought light to the darkest corners of Gaza.
