RAWALPINDI: Imran Khan, the incarcerated founder of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), issued legal threats to the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) chairman and investigation officer (IO) during a court hearing on Friday. Khan pointed at NAB IO Mohsin Haroon and accused him of fabricating cases against his wife, Bushra Bibi.
“My spouse is in prison because of the false cases you created,” Khan said during the hearing of the new Toshakhana reference filed against him and Bushra Bibi. He warned both Haroon and the NAB chairman that he would take legal action once he is released from jail.
On September 2, an accountability court in Rawalpindi extended the judicial remand of Khan and his wife in the new Toshakhana case. This case involves allegations related to a jewelry set gifted to Bushra Bibi by the Saudi crown prince when Khan was prime minister from 2018 to 2022.
Khan, who was ousted from office through a no-confidence vote in 2022, expressed frustration and said he wouldn’t “spare” the NAB officials responsible for the cases against him.
“I will take you both to court over these fabricated cases,” he added.
The NAB investigation officer later informed the media that this was not the first time Khan had made threats, stating that the former premier had threatened them at least four times before.
This kind of threat is not new for Khan. After his removal from office in 2022, he gave a fiery speech targeting Islamabad police officials and Judge Zeba Chaudhry, vowing to “take action” against them for allegedly torturing his party leader Shahbaz Gill.
At the hearing, the NAB prosecution team requested an adjournment, citing the absence of their prosecutor, Umar Majeed. The team mentioned they needed time to review the Supreme Court’s recent decision regarding NAB amendments.
The accountability court accepted the request and adjourned the hearing until September 9.
Internal Party Disputes
After the hearing, Khan spoke to journalists and warned his party members not to plot against Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur. Without naming anyone, Khan said some individuals within PTI were undermining Gandapur, but he stood by him.
“This is not the time for differences. If you plot against Ali Amin, don’t expect me to help you secure election tickets in the future,” Khan added.
Bushra Bibi’s Legal Troubles
Bushra Bibi was first arrested in January and placed under house arrest in Bani Gala. Both Khan and Bushra were convicted in the Toshakhana case, which involved the illegal sale of state gifts.
Their sentences were suspended by the Islamabad High Court (IHC) in April, but Bushra was transferred to Rawalpindi’s Adiala Jail in May after challenging her house arrest in court.
In July, both were acquitted in a separate “iddat” case by a district court. However, Bushra remains in custody due to other ongoing investigations, including the £190 million National Crime Agency (NCA) scandal and the new Toshakhana reference.
