PM Shehbaz Sharif Arrives in New York for UNGA Session

NEW YORK: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has arrived in New York for the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). He will deliver a key address on Friday, outlining Pakistan’s stance on international and regional issues.

In his speech, PM Shehbaz will highlight the Jammu and Kashmir dispute and the conflict in Palestine. He will also stress Pakistan’s support for multilateralism and the UN’s role in promoting global peace.

With the high-level debate running from September 24 to 28, security around the UN complex has been tightened. The prime minister will attend several meetings, including discussions on the threat from rising sea levels and the ‘SDG Moment 2024’. He will also speak at the UN Security Council’s debate on leadership for peace.

Alongside these engagements, PM Shehbaz will meet world leaders to discuss common concerns and explore ways to improve bilateral relations.

Climate Change and Terrorism in Focus

During his address, PM Shehbaz will highlight the severe impact of climate change on vulnerable countries like Pakistan. He will also stress Pakistan’s sacrifices in the fight against terrorism and discuss challenges faced by debt-ridden nations.

The prime minister will reiterate Pakistan’s position on India’s occupation of Kashmir and call for global action to stop the genocide of Palestinians by Israeli forces.

Bilateral Meetings and Economic Engagements

On the sidelines of the UNGA, PM Shehbaz will hold multiple bilateral meetings, including one with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres. He will also meet with leaders of the European Commission, World Bank, and IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva. These meetings aim to strengthen international partnerships and seek support for Pakistan’s economic and environmental challenges.

PM Shehbaz is also scheduled to meet with prominent business leaders, including members of the US-Pakistan Business Council and Pakistani bankers. He will promote Pakistan’s business-friendly policies and attract investment to boost the country’s economy.

Meeting with Palestinian President

One of the prime minister’s key meetings will be with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas. The two leaders will strategize on how to garner international support to end Israel’s ongoing occupation and aggression in Palestine.

PM Shehbaz will attend a luncheon hosted by the Sultan of Brunei, celebrating 40 years of Brunei’s UN membership. Later, he will join a dinner reception by Dr. Muhammad Yunus of Bangladesh, marking 50 years of Bangladesh’s membership in the UN. Relations between Pakistan and Bangladesh have improved since former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s exit. PM Shehbaz is also expected to meet Dr. Yunus one-on-one to further strengthen ties.

High-Level Delegation

PM Shehbaz is joined by Defence Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif, Information Minister Attaullah Tarar, Education Minister Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui, and Special Assistant Tariq Fatemi. This high-level team shows Pakistan’s commitment to engaging global leaders and addressing key international issues.

PM Shehbaz’s visit is expected to amplify Pakistan’s voice on global platforms, advocating for peace, development, and justice.
