Imran Khan, Bushra Bibi to Be Indicted in Toshakhana Case on October 2

The new Toshakhana reference emerged shortly after the Islamabad district and sessions court acquitted the couple in the Iddat case as the "un-Islamic Nikah case."

RAWALPINDI: Authorities confirmed on Thursday that Imran Khan, the founder of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), and his wife Bushra Bibi will be indicted in a new Toshakhana reference on October 2.

The case comes after a series of legal actions involving the couple. Last week, the Supreme Court ordered the transfer of the case to the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) after barring the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) from pursuing it. The court’s decision restored amendments to the anti-corruption laws, changing the jurisdiction.

Imran Khan, the former prime minister, has been in jail for almost a year. He faces convictions in four separate cases: two Toshakhana references, the cipher case, and the Iddat case. His wife, Bushra Bibi, is also imprisoned due to her involvement in the same cases.

Un-Islamic Nikah Case

The new Toshakhana reference emerged shortly after the Islamabad district and sessions court acquitted the couple in the Iddat case, also known as the “un-Islamic Nikah case.” Although the acquittal should have cleared the way for their release, they were immediately rearrested by NAB.

On Thursday, Special Judge Central Shahrukh Arjumand heard the post-arrest bail requests from both Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi. The hearing took place in a makeshift court at Adiala prison, where the couple remains.

The defense lawyers presented their arguments in favor of bail. However, the prosecution asked for more time to respond, sparking opposition from the defense team.

Imran Khan’s lawyer, Salman Safdar, urged the court to make a decision on the bail applications. He argued that the prosecution had asked for the hearing and should not delay the process.

Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi then approached the rostrum to speak. Khan insisted his wife was innocent and had no connection to the case. He also described his harsh conditions in prison, stating, “I spend 22 hours in a prison cage.”

Despite the defense’s objections, the court granted the prosecution more time to prepare. As a result, the judge adjourned the hearing until September 28.

The case has attracted widespread public and media attention. Imran Khan’s supporters are closely watching every legal development, as the Toshakhana case and other charges continue to impact his political future.

In conclusion, the October 2 indictment will be a critical moment in the legal battles facing Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi. The transfer of the case to the FIA and delays in the bail hearings add complexity to an already intense situation. All eyes are on the judiciary as the next hearing approaches.
