Bisan Owda and AJ+ Win Emmy for Gaza Coverage

It’s Bisan From Gaza – and I’m Still Alive.

Palestinian journalist Bisan Owda and Al Jazeera’s AJ+ have won an Emmy in the Outstanding Hard News Feature Story category for their impactful documentary, It’s Bisan From Gaza – and I’m Still Alive. This recognition comes despite a campaign by a pro-Israel lobby to rescind her nomination, which the Television Academy ultimately rejected.

Bisan Owda has been a prominent voice from Gaza since Israel began its assault on the territory last October. Throughout these 11 months of conflict, she has tirelessly shared the stories of ordinary Palestinians, bringing their struggles to a global audience.

AJ+ senior executive producer Jon Laurence accepted the award on Owda’s behalf. He emphasized the significance of her work. “This award is testimony to the power of one woman, armed only with an iPhone, who survived almost a year of bombardment,” Laurence stated. He also highlighted the tragic reality that over 100 Palestinian journalists have lost their lives in Gaza, including those affiliated with Al Jazeera.

Earlier this month, the Creative Community for Peace, a pro-Israel nonprofit organization, publicly criticized Owda’s nomination. They claimed that her short film documented the initial days of the Israeli bombardment and its severe impact on everyday life in Gaza. The letter accused Owda of having ties to the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP), allegations she has vehemently denied.

Al Jazeera’s Response

In response, Al Jazeera condemned the accusations as “baseless” and described them as an attempt to silence Owda. The network characterized the campaign to rescind her nomination as a threat to her safety and an effort to deny a crucial perspective on the ongoing war. “The call for the Emmy nomination to be rescinded is nothing more than an attempt to deny an important perspective to the global audience on the war and its devastating impact on innocent civilians,” the statement read.

Bisan Owda has gained prominence as an activist and filmmaker through her engaging content on Instagram and TikTok. Her catchphrase, “I’m Still Alive,” resonates in her videos, where she documents her experiences during the conflict. In May, she and AJ+ also received a Peabody Award for their comprehensive coverage of the situation in Gaza, further solidifying her status as a key voice in journalism.

The Emmy win signifies not just recognition for Owda but also a powerful statement about the importance of diverse narratives in media. It highlights the resilience of journalists who continue to report from conflict zones, often at great personal risk.

As the situation in Gaza continues to evolve, Bisan Owda remains committed to her work. She aims to amplify the voices of those affected by the ongoing violence. The Emmy award not only honors her contributions but also underscores the critical role of journalism in shedding light on the human cost of war.

In conclusion, Bisan Owda’s achievement reflects the tenacity and courage of journalists reporting from the frontlines. Her story inspires others to seek truth and justice, even amidst overwhelming challenges.
