India secured a 2-0 series sweep against Bangladesh in the second and final Test in Kanpur on Tuesday. This victory shattered multiple records, including a staggering run rate of 7.36. This achievement marks the highest run rate in Test cricket history. The previous record of 6.80 was held by South Africa against Zimbabwe in 2005.
The match ended with India triumphing by seven wickets, despite rain affecting play and causing the loss of two-and-a-half days. Earlier in the series, India had dominated the first Test in Chennai, winning by 280 runs. Consequently, this victory marked India’s record-extending 18th consecutive Test series win on home soil.
In the final innings, India bundled out Bangladesh for just 146 runs before lunch on the fifth day. Chasing a target of 95, India quickly reached 98-3 in only 104 balls during the second session. This impressive performance showcased India’s batting prowess, setting new records for the fastest team 50, 100, and 200 in a single innings.
The Indian team scored at an astonishing rate of 8.22 runs per over, finishing with a total of 285 runs in the first innings. This score gave them a 52-run lead over Bangladesh, as reported by the ICC.
Yashasvi Jaiswal emerged as a key player in this match. He played a significant role in India’s victory and earned the “Player of the Match” title. Jaiswal also broke Sunil Gavaskar’s long-standing record for most runs by an Indian player under 23. Jaiswal amassed 929 runs in 2024, surpassing Gavaskar’s 918 runs in 1971.

Second Innings
In the second innings, Jaiswal reached his second fifty of the match off just 43 balls, hitting eight fours and one six. However, he eventually fell to Taijul Islam, ending a crucial 58-run partnership with Virat Kohli. Kohli contributed 29 runs and was present at the end when Rishabh Pant hit the winning boundary.
Bangladesh’s bowling attack included Mehidy Hasan Miraz, who removed Rohit Sharma for eight runs and Shubman Gill for six. The series victory enhances India’s lead at the top of the World Test Championship rankings, putting them ahead of Australia.
India’s first innings saw Jaiswal’s explosive 72-run performance, which was crucial in forcing a result in this match, especially considering that rain and a wet outfield halted play on Saturday and Sunday.
On the final day, Bangladesh resumed their second innings at 26-2 but quickly fell apart during the first session. Opener Shadman Islam managed to top-score with 50 runs. Indian bowlers Ravichandran Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, and Jasprit Bumrah each took three wickets, effectively dismantling Bangladesh’s batting lineup.
Mushfiqur Rahim attempted to frustrate India, but he was the last man out, bowled by Bumrah for 37 runs. Ashwin struck early by dismissing first-innings centurion Mominul Haque for just two runs. Jadeja continued his impressive performance, claiming the wickets of Najmul Hossain and Shakib Al Hasan, the latter potentially playing his last Test for Bangladesh.
Ultimately, Bangladesh was bowled out for 233 runs in their first innings, while India declared at 285-9 in just 34.4 overs. Looking ahead, both teams will now shift their focus to a three-match T20 series starting on Sunday in Gwalior.
