United States President Joe Biden has opposed any strikes on Iran’s nuclear sites following Tehran’s missile attack on Israel. When asked on Wednesday if he would support such retaliation, Biden firmly replied, “the answer is no.”
This statement came a day after Iran fired 180 ballistic missiles at Israel, marking the second attack since April. These strikes followed the assassination of key Iran-allied leaders, including Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh and Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah.
Israel’s Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, vowed that Iran would “pay” for the strike. However, reports indicated that while there were no serious casualties in Israel, one Palestinian was killed in the occupied West Bank.
Analysts warned that Israel might take this opportunity to target Iran’s nuclear facilities. Ali Vaez, director of the Iran Project at the International Crisis Group, pointed out that the risk of an Israeli attack on Iran’s nuclear program is high. He noted that Hezbollah, Iran’s defensive shield, is weakened. Vaez added that with U.S. forces already present in the region, Israel may view this as a rare chance to address a long-standing threat from Iran.
Former Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett called for an immediate strike on Iran’s nuclear program. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Bennett argued that Israel had both the justification and the tools to act now.
Despite calls for action, Biden emphasized a different approach. After speaking with allied leaders, he stressed that any Israeli response should be “proportional.” He highlighted that the G7 countries, including Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, and the United Kingdom, shared this view.
The White House also mentioned that Biden and G7 leaders discussed coordinating new sanctions against Iran. While Biden reaffirmed strong U.S. support for Israel, his administration is advocating caution regarding military escalation.
Meanwhile, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian defended the missile attack but clarified that Iran does not seek war with Israel. Iran’s armed forces also warned that if Israel retaliates, it will face “vast destruction,” underscoring the high stakes in the region.
