RAWALPINDI: Dr. Asim Hussain, Imran Khan’s personal physician, arrived at Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi on Tuesday to meet the former prime minister for a medical examination. However, the jail authorities denied him entry.
PTI officials reported that Dr. Hussain, who also serves as the CEO of Shaukat Khanum Hospital, waited outside the jail, seeking clearance to meet Imran Khan. PTI had already raised concerns about Khan’s health and demanded a medical check-up for their leader.
The party threatened protests if the authorities failed to provide proper medical care for Khan. However, PTI called off a planned protest at D-Chowk in Islamabad after the government assured them that a medical examination would take place.
PTI’s political committee made the decision to cancel the protest after a meeting. The party also factored in the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit happening in Islamabad, prompting them to reconsider the demonstration.

PTI Protest
Earlier, PTI planned to gather supporters from across the country for a protest at D-Chowk. The party had issued marching orders to its members and ticket holders. PTI workers were also instructed to assemble in Swabi by noon, ready to head to Islamabad. However, after receiving assurances from the government, PTI canceled the protest.
Barrister Gohar Ali Khan, a key PTI leader, confirmed that the party decided to halt the demonstration. He explained that Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi had reached out to the party, guaranteeing that Imran Khan would receive a medical examination. Gohar emphasized that the protest was conditional on the government’s actions, and since their demands had been met, the party saw no reason to proceed.
A medical team, including Dr. Hussain, is now expected to visit Adiala Jail to examine Khan. PTI’s leadership expressed satisfaction with the government’s assurances and postponed the protest. However, Gohar stressed that the protest could be reignited if the government fails to keep its promises.
Reports indicated that PTI set clear conditions for the government to avoid the protest. These included allowing Imran Khan’s sisters and doctors to visit him in jail due to concerns about his health. PTI had also sent a formal request to the Ministry of Interior, seeking permission for Barrister Gohar Ali Khan and Hamid Raza to meet Khan.
Pml-N Rejected PTI’s Demands
Initially, the ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) rejected PTI’s demands. Ministers warned they would take strict action against any efforts to disrupt the SCO summit. However, the federal government later agreed to PTI’s request for a medical check-up for Khan.
A medical team from the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) will conduct a detailed examination of Imran Khan at Adiala Jail. Dr. Asim Hussain will accompany the medical team.
In response to PTI’s protest plans, police launched raids earlier in the day to arrest PTI candidates and workers. Many members went into hiding to avoid detention. The interior minister issued strict security measures, stating that no gatherings would be allowed in Islamabad during the SCO summit.
