Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif inaugurated the Gwadar International Airport on Monday, via a virtual ceremony, highlighting it as a “gift” from China. The event took place during the visit of Chinese Prime Minister Li Qiang, who arrived in Pakistan for a four-day bilateral trip. This visit marks the first by a Chinese premier in 11 years, with the last being by Li Keqiang in May 2013.

The inauguration ceremony included the unveiling of the airport plaque and was attended by both delegations, military leaders, and senior officials. PM Shehbaz expressed hope that the new airport would transform the economy of Gwadar and Pakistan as a whole. He acknowledged the Chinese leadership’s commitment to supporting Pakistan’s economic agenda and developing its less prosperous regions.

During the ceremony, PM Shehbaz emphasized the strong friendship between Pakistan and China. He stated that the completion of the airport signified the dedication of both nations to enhance their ties. He also noted the signing and exchange of several memorandums of understanding (MoUs) in various sectors, including industry, commerce, and agriculture, which he expects will evolve into formal agreements.

“another feather in the cap”

The Prime Minister extended his gratitude to Chinese President Xi Jinping, Premier Li, and the people of China for their support. He remarked that the airport is “another feather in the cap” of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). PM Shehbaz assured Premier Li of Pakistan’s commitment to working closely to complete the second phase of CPEC, emphasizing the importance of peace and security for both nations.

In response, Premier Li congratulated Pakistan on the completion of the Gwadar airport, thanking the Pakistani people for their support. He described the project as a manifestation of the hard work and collaboration between Chinese and Pakistani engineers. He highlighted the airport’s significance for enhancing regional connectivity and boosting shipping and port activities.

More High-qualityz Projects

Premier Li reaffirmed China’s commitment to working with Pakistan on high-quality projects under the Belt and Road Initiative. He characterized the Pak-China relationship as a “special friendship” and underscored the deepening of their all-weather strategic partnership. He reiterated the importance of accelerating mutual economic development.

Planning Minister Ahsan Iqbal expressed gratitude to Premier Li for his inspiring remarks and commitment. He pointed out that the airport symbolizes economic prosperity and will pave the way for regional connectivity.

The airport’s virtual launch was initially delayed due to violent incidents in Balochistan in August. Both nations took the opportunity to reaffirm their support for each other on core issues and pledged to advance CPEC’s second phase to the highest standards.

During the delegation-level talks at the Prime Minister’s House, PM Shehbaz and Premier Li discussed various aspects of their bilateral relationship, regional, and global issues. They expressed satisfaction that the Pakistan-China Strategic Cooperative Partnership, built on mutual trust, continues to strengthen.

Both leaders stressed the timely completion of ongoing projects across sectors, including industry and technology, to benefit the socio-economic development of Pakistan. PM Shehbaz reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to ensuring the safety of Chinese nationals and investments.

Strategies

The discussions also focused on relocating Chinese industry to Pakistan and strategies to boost Chinese investment. The two sides agreed to maintain high-level contacts and continue consultations on regional and global matters at multilateral forums.

As Premier Li commenced his visit, PM Shehbaz expressed hope that the four-day trip would be “productive,” further solidifying the enduring ties between Pakistan and China.
