JIT to Probe Disinformation Punjab College Incident

RAWALPINDI: A seven-member joint investigation team (JIT) has been formed to investigate the spread of disinformation related to an alleged sexual assault incident at a private educational institution in Lahore. The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) leads the investigation, focusing on the role of social media in spreading false information.

FIA Deputy Director Forensics, Waqas Saeed, heads the investigation team. The team also includes Assistant Director Muhammad Ali Yazdan, Software AD Muhammad Ashan, Technical Assistant Ghulam Mustafa, SHO Ali Raza, Sub-Inspector Yasir Rahim, and Mohsin Raza. They will work together to uncover the facts behind the alleged incident.

The Lahore FIA Cybercrime division issued a notification, instructing the team to investigate and report back on the case.

Principal of the College Involvement

According to an FIA officer, the principal of the college involved in the alleged incident filed a complaint with the FIA Lahore. The complaint highlighted that false propaganda on social media had caused significant unrest. The misinformation allegedly triggered protests and attacks on the college campus, leading to property damage and harm to the staff.

In response, the college administration is fully cooperating with the Punjab Police. They have provided CCTV footage of the campus and handed over campus security guards for questioning. The complaint also mentioned that two students had been warned previously for unauthorized video recordings on the campus. Their social media accounts are now under investigation.

The complaint further stated that protests, fueled by misinformation, had spread to other cities. Due to the severity of the situation, the college demanded an immediate inquiry.

An FIA spokesperson confirmed the formation of the joint investigation team. He stated that the team consists of members from FIA Cybercrime and local police departments. The investigation has officially started, and the team aims to identify those responsible for spreading disinformation.

The authorities are treating the case with urgency, recognizing the potential impact of false information on public safety and the reputation of educational institutions.
