ISLAMABAD: The Federal Cabinet, led by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, has approved the draft of the 26th constitutional amendment. This decision was made during a cabinet session on Sunday.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif briefed the cabinet about his meeting with President Asif Ali Zardari. He also updated the members on the response from Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI) leader Maulana Fazlur Rehman regarding the proposed amendment.

Federal Law Minister Azam Nazir Tarar, along with the Attorney General, provided a detailed briefing to the cabinet on the draft. The session discussed some proposed changes to the amendment before moving forward.

After thorough deliberation, the cabinet gave its approval to the final draft of the 26th constitutional amendment.

Earlier, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif held an important meeting with President Zardari before the cabinet session. Law Minister Tarar and Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi were also present. The meeting focused on finalizing the strategy for the passage of the constitutional amendment.

The ruling coalition is determined to pass the amendment in parliament today, despite the obstacles, sources indicate. They emphasize that they made the decision in the best interest of national development and public welfare.

Following the cabinet session, Prime Minister Sharif emphasized the significance of the approval. “This decision is a step toward economic and constitutional stability in Pakistan,” he said. “We have reached a key milestone in ensuring the rule of law and the progress of the nation.”

National Development, Prosperity, and Stability

The prime minister also assured the public that the government would continue its efforts for national development, prosperity, and stability, as promised during the election campaign. He expressed optimism that the 26th constitutional amendment would bring about positive changes for the country’s governance and legal framework.

The draft will now be presented in parliament for approval, where the ruling coalition will seek the required two-thirds majority to pass the amendment. The proposed changes aim to bring significant reforms to Pakistan’s judicial system, among other key areas.

The passage of the amendment is viewed as critical to reinforcing the rule of law in the country. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has highlighted the importance of the amendment in achieving both economic recovery and constitutional stability.

The government’s determination to pass the amendment today underscores the priority it places on strengthening Pakistan’s democratic institutions and ensuring long-term stability. The coalition’s leaders remain confident that with the support of key allies, they will secure enough votes in both houses of parliament.

As the political landscape continues to shift, the 26th constitutional amendment represents a significant step in the government’s efforts to address long-standing legal and governance issues. If passed, it will mark a major victory for the ruling coalition in its mission to bring about meaningful reforms and deliver on promises made to the Pakistani people.
