The Supreme Court of Pakistan hosted a full-court reference to bid farewell to outgoing Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Qazi Faez Isa on Friday. Supreme Court judges, senior lawyers, and notable personalities attended the ceremony, showering praise on Justice Isa’s contributions. CJP-designate Justice Yahya Afridi, who will replace CJP Isa, and Attorney General for Pakistan Mansoor Usman Awan, lauded Isa’s service during the reference.

In his farewell address, CJP Isa reflected on his judicial journey. He shared that his appointment as the Chief Justice of Balochistan was pivotal, saying, “I accepted the position at a time when there was no judge in Balochistan.” The judge recalled his wife’s influence on his career, particularly her support for his service in Balochistan.

Justice Isa also shared a humorous moment, stating, “Hours are left to freedom.” He expressed deep respect for lawyers, saying, “I haven’t learned from anyone as much as I learned from the lawyers.”

Key Milestones and Family Support

CJP Isa attributed much of his progress to family values and the support of his wife, Sarina Isa, who was present at the event. Recalling his beginnings, Isa noted that his father was the first barrister in Balochistan and shared that he completed his studies before embarking on his 42-year judicial career, which coincided with his marriage.

CJP Isa described his surprise at being selected as Balochistan’s Chief Justice while writing for an English newspaper, a decision made by then-CJP Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry. Reflecting on his tenure, he emphasized his duty to uphold justice, remarking, “It is our responsibility to serve justice.”

Justice Afridi Praises His Predecessor

Justice Afridi praised Isa’s warmth and integrity, saying, “Chief Justice Qazi Faez Isa will be missed in the Supreme Court.” He shared memories of their professional interactions, recalling Isa’s kindness and candor. While Afridi admitted he had disagreed with Isa in some instances, he appreciated Isa’s openness, adding humorously, “Only God can help you when CJP Isa is angry!”

Justice Afridi’s Upcoming Term and Vision

Justice Afridi will take his oath as the new CJP on October 26 in a ceremony at Aiwan-e-Sadr, administered by President Asif Ali Zardari. Afridi will serve a three-year term, marking his appointment under Articles 175A(3), 177, and 179 of the Constitution. His priorities include empowering district courts in remote areas, focusing on equitable justice delivery across Pakistan.

Controversial Reforms and Political Response

Justice Afridi’s appointment comes amid newly passed judicial reforms, which were secured through a parliamentary vote. The coalition government’s reforms have sparked controversy, with the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) opposing the legislation. The PTI has also rejected Justice Afridi’s nomination, pledging to overturn the reforms if it regains power.

As the judicial landscape faces transformations, Justice Isa leaves a legacy marked by dedication, while Justice Afridi takes on the responsibility of steering the judiciary forward.
