Manchester United Dismisses Manager Erik Ten Hag

Share the latest news updates

Manchester United has officially dismissed manager Erik ten Hag following a challenging start to the season, which saw the club languishing at 14th place in the Premier League. United’s recent 2-1 defeat at West Ham marked Ten Hag’s last game in charge, capping off a disappointing run that includes only three wins from nine league matches. The club’s struggles extend into the Europa League as well, where United sits at 21st out of 36 teams after drawing its first three fixtures.

Van Nistelrooy Steps In as Interim Coach

Ruud van Nistelrooy, Ten Hag’s assistant, is now the interim manager. United confirmed Van Nistelrooy will lead the team “while a permanent head coach is recruited,” signaling their determination to find a long-term solution. This swift change highlights the club’s urgency to turn around its season, with van Nistelrooy temporarily steering the squad through the current transition.

Club Leadership Seeks New Long-Term Manager

The decision for Ten Hag’s departure took place in a meeting at the Carrington training ground, attended by Chief Executive Omar Berrada and Sporting Director Dan Ashworth. Club sources indicated that while parting with Ten Hag was difficult, it was a unanimous decision. United’s captain, Bruno Fernandes, expressed gratitude for Ten Hag’s leadership, writing, “Thanks for everything, boss,” on social media, while adding his well-wishes for the former manager’s future.

Despite United’s initial confidence in Ten Hag—demonstrated by a one-year extension to his contract after winning the FA Cup final against Manchester City in May—the team’s struggles this season ultimately led to the decision. United’s current league performance of 11 points from nine games marks its second-lowest tally at this stage since 2019-20, underscoring the challenges the club has faced on the pitch.

The search is now on for United’s sixth permanent manager since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement in 2013.
