Omar Ayub, Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly, announced that Bushra Bibi has been acquitted of all charges. He added that PTI founder Imran Khan would also be released soon. Speaking to the media after his appearance in a special anti-terrorism court, Ayub shared updates on key party members and their legal battles.
Omar Ayub noted that over 85 of their party members remain in custody under military courts. He highlighted that prominent PTI leaders, including Hassan Niazi and Shah Mahmood Qureshi, are still detained. “We salute these sacrifices,” he stated, emphasizing that their efforts would not go in vain.
Raid on Peaceful Press Conference
Omar Ayub criticized a recent raid on a peaceful press conference led by PTI women outside Adiala Jail. He stated that Kanwal Shauzab and other women gathered there in support but were interrupted by the police. Ayub also addressed comments made by Punjab CM Maryam Nawaz, calling them “absurd” and “fabricated.” He reiterated the party’s unwavering support for Imran Khan amid these challenges.
Ayub expressed his admiration for Imran Khan, calling him courageous. “Imran Khan stands with strength,” Ayub said. He also raised concerns about Khan’s treatment in jail, noting that electricity had been cut, food quality was poor, causing nausea, and the water supply had stopped.
Anti-Terrorism Court Proceedings Continue
Ayub mentioned that the Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) had distributed copies related to the May 9 case. He attended the proceedings as warrants had been issued, and hearings would continue over the next two days in Lahore and Faisalabad.
Tribute to Bushra Bibi’s Resilience
Omar Ayub also praised Bushra Bibi, who he said endured nine months in jail with dignity. He alleged that her food was tampered with, claiming unknown substances had been added. Despite these hardships, he said, she “stood firm like a wall of iron.”
Earlier, the Islamabad High Court (IHC) issued notices to several Punjab officials, including the interior secretary, law secretary, and Adiala Jail superintendent. The notices relate to a petition challenging the removal of prison facilities from Imran Khan. Justice Arbab Muhammad Tahir heard the petition filed by Noreen Niazi, with Advocate Shoaib Shaheen representing her.
Petition Highlights Violation of Prisoner Rights
The petition argues that Imran Khan’s B-class facilities were withdrawn without justification, despite his entitlement. Facilities such as access to newspapers, television, and exercise have been cut, and electricity in his cell was reportedly disconnected. The petition also states that Khan has been denied phone contact with his children, which Shaheen claims is a violation of court orders.
Shoaib Shaheen contended that the withdrawal of these facilities is unlawful and disregards court orders. He called for the immediate restoration of these rights, which he said are standard for a B-class prisoner.
Omar Ayub and PTI leadership continue to criticize these actions and demand fair treatment for Imran Khan and other detained members. The party maintains that it will stand firm in its support for its leaders and pursue justice through the courts.
