China Mobile Unveils High-Speed 6G Baseband Prototype

Share the latest news updates

In a significant step for next-generation networks, China Mobile has unveiled a 6G baseband prototype system designed for the Sub-7GHz frequency band. This advanced baseband promises breakthrough capabilities, from ultra-high-speed data transfer to enhanced interconnectivity, setting a strong foundation for future 6G communication technologies.

Collaborative Innovation for 6G Development

China Mobile’s latest project was developed in collaboration with the Zhongguancun Pan-Institute of Information and Communications Technology, China Information Technology Mobile, and smartphone maker Vivo. The new 6G prototype leverages the capabilities of China Mobile’s advanced “synaesthesia, computing, and intelligence fusion” platform. This platform integrates sensory data, computational power, and communications technologies to support next-generation demands.

Key Features of the 6G Baseband Prototype

At its core, the 6G baseband system is built on a cloud-based heterogeneous hardware structure. This structure enhances both flexibility and performance. With this architecture, it supports a data throughput of up to 100Gbps for container networks. Also, ultra-fast transmission time interval (TTI) of just 125 microseconds (μs). The system also boasts an interrupt response delay under 10μs, delivering ultra-low latency and making it ideal for applications demanding real-time responsiveness, such as ultra-high-definition video streaming and 3D video transmission.

Supporting eight data streams and 128 digital channels, the prototype’s single-carrier bandwidth reaches 400MHz, which enables a real-time baseband throughput of up to 16.5Gbps. This robust baseband processing capability positions the system as a key component in 6G testing and verification.

Open and Interoperable System for Broad Collaboration

China Mobile has made this 6G prototype system open and interoperable, which enables seamless integration between cloud-based heterogeneous hardware and terminal prototypes, including those developed by Vivo. The system’s open architecture facilitates easy connection between the base station and terminal, allowing for efficient transmission of high-bandwidth services, such as real-time 3D video and other interactive content expected to define the 6G era.

Expanding 6G with a Multi-Band Approach

China Mobile’s 6G prototype has multi-band integrated universal fronthaul module, making it adaptable across a range of frequency bands. The module connects to the baseband unit (BBU) via an ultra-high-speed Common Public Radio Interface (CPRI). It also supports intermediate frequency signals from 0 to 12GHz. This flexibility enables the system to work seamlessly with various radio frequency (RF) front ends, spanning medium and low frequencies, millimeter waves, visible light, and even terahertz frequencies. Such adaptability ensures that this 6G prototype can accommodate evolving radio requirements, supporting wide-ranging research, testing, and verification of 6G components across different bands.

Building Blocks Toward Commercial 6G Rollout

While it will likely take a decade for 6G to roll out commercially, early innovations like this prototype are critical. By creating a collaborative ecosystem, China Mobile’s baseband prototype encourages partners to test and refine their 6G technologies. This baseband system underscores China’s continued commitment to driving advancements in mobile technology. This innovation could set a new standard for wireless communications.
