OpenAI Launches ChatGPT Search, New Challenge to Search Engines
OpenAI released a new search feature for its ChatGPT platform on Thursday. Called “SearchGPT,” this feature enables users to access live information like sports scores, stock prices, news updates, and weather. The feature, tested since July, was built with partnerships from news and data providers. OpenAI aims to make it easier for users to find real-time answers to questions.
The launch could impact Google’s dominance in the search market. Since ChatGPT’s debut in November 2022, Alphabet investors have been concerned that OpenAI might draw users away from Google. On Thursday, Alphabet’s shares dropped by about 1%, reflecting these market concerns.
Microsoft also faces potential competition from SearchGPT. Despite investing nearly $14 billion in OpenAI, Microsoft’s own search products, such as Bing and Copilot, now directly compete with ChatGPT’s capabilities.
User Experience and Improved Interactivity
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman expressed excitement about the search feature. In a Reddit AMA, Altman noted that SearchGPT allows users to “search in a more natural, intuitive way” by asking questions and following up as in a conversation. He shared his view that the tool is “faster and easier” for complex research, which could redefine how people interact with search engines.
Users can initiate a search by clicking the web search icon. Additionally, ChatGPT now provides links to sources, like articles and blog posts, which users can view by clicking a “Sources” button under the response.
Future Developments for SearchGPT
In a blog post, OpenAI stated it would continue refining SearchGPT based on user feedback. Planned improvements include capabilities for shopping and travel, leveraging OpenAI’s advanced models for detailed research. Altman indicated that future search results could even generate custom web pages dynamically.
The feature has rolled out to ChatGPT Plus and Team users, as well as SearchGPT waitlist members. ChatGPT Enterprise and Edu users will gain access in the coming weeks, while users on ChatGPT’s free version can expect the feature over the coming months.
Collaborations with Major News Partners
To support real-time information, OpenAI collaborated with multiple news partners, including The Associated Press, Reuters, Axel Springer, and Condé Nast. OpenAI says these partnerships enhance the accuracy and quality of the information provided by ChatGPT.
Financial Strength and Market Valuation
This launch follows OpenAI’s successful funding round, which valued the company at $157 billion. The round added $6.6 billion in investment, including a $4 billion credit line. OpenAI’s total liquidity now stands at over $10 billion. The company projects losses of around $5 billion against a revenue of $3.7 billion for this year, as reported by sources close to OpenAI.
Internal Challenges and Shifting Priorities
OpenAI has faced internal controversies recently, with key executives leaving and some voicing concerns about shifting company priorities. Former safety team leader Jan Leike resigned, stating that “safety culture and processes have taken a backseat to shiny products.”
As OpenAI transitions to a for-profit model, the company’s focus on rapid growth and product expansion highlights both its rising influence in the tech world and the challenges it faces in balancing innovation with ethical considerations.
