Defence Minister Khawaja Asif on Wednesday stated that Pakistan’s government does not expect U.S. President-elect Donald Trump to push for Imran Khan’s release. During a broadcast on the U.S. election, Asif said, “We don’t think Trump will call for PTI founder’s release. Let’s wait 15 to 20 days and see his stance.” Trump, a Republican, recently won against Democrat Kamala Harris, reclaiming the presidency after a four-year gap.

After Trump’s win, Imran Khan congratulated him, hoping for stronger Pak-U.S. ties rooted in democracy and human rights. Imprisoned due to multiple convictions, Khan expressed hope that Trump’s administration would also support global peace and rights.
Opposition Leaders Extend Congratulations
Omar Ayub Khan, the Leader of the Opposition and PTI member, congratulated Trump and his VP-elect, JD Vance. Ayub’s support comes as Imran Khan remains imprisoned, having served over a year following various convictions. Despite his detention, PTI sees Trump’s win as a potential diplomatic advantage, recalling Khan’s positive ties with Trump’s last administration.
PTI leader Raoof Hasan clarified that the party has no expectations of foreign intervention. “We had never pinned hopes on Trump, and we aren’t relying on his win now. We’re taking support from the judiciary, parliament, and peaceful protests for Khan’s release,” he said. Hasan confirmed that PTI has held no internal discussions about seeking external help.

Hasan also discussed PTI’s ties with Pakistan’s establishment. He said the party has “normal interaction” with them, though they have no direct contact about Khan’s legal issues. Hasan added that PTI relies on local institutions and protests to secure Khan’s freedom.
