Death Toll Rises as RSF Siege Grips Al Hilaliya, Sudan

Share the latest news updates

More than 79 civilians have reportedly died in Al Hilaliya, Sudan, under a siege by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). The RSF has maintained a blockade in this city in eastern Gezira for nearly two weeks. The volunteer group Nidaa Al-Wasat Platform reported the rising death toll on Thursday.

Al Hilaliya is now like a “large prison” for nearly 100,000 residents. Severe shortages of food and medicine have created dire conditions. Dozens have died from health issues as disease outbreaks spread. Lack of essential supplies is worsening the crisis, putting residents at greater risk.

RSF Attacks in Gezira Reported

Local activists and volunteer groups allege that the RSF has launched attacks across eastern Gezira. These reports came after the RSF’s regional commander, Abu Aqla Keikel, and his forces surrendered to the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) on October 20. This event appears to have intensified RSF’s actions in Gezira.

The RSF denies targeting civilians. RSF advisor Imran Abdullah stated on the social media platform X on October 29 that their operations target armed groups supporting the Sudanese army. He claimed those affected were not civilians, alleging a “deliberate” effort to arm local residents, which the RSF aims to prevent.

Tens of Thousands Displaced

Violence in Gezira has led to widespread displacement. The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs reported that over 135,400 people have fled their homes since October 20. More than 30 villages and towns have been affected, leaving entire communities displaced and in search of safety.

Ongoing Conflict in Sudan

Sudan’s conflict began in April 2023, triggered by a power struggle between the SAF and RSF. The violence has spread across regions, destabilizing the country and worsening the humanitarian crisis. The Armed Conflict Location and Event Data Project reported that the conflict has claimed more than 24,850 lives by mid-October.

The International Organisation for Migration (IOM) reported over 14 million people displaced by the violence, both within Sudan and in neighboring countries as of October 29. The displacement crisis highlights the urgent need for humanitarian intervention.

Calls for Ceasefire and Aid Access

Human rights groups are urging for a ceasefire to allow aid into Al Hilaliya and other affected areas. As civilians struggle for survival, global humanitarian bodies are pressing both the RSF and SAF to prioritize civilian safety and open routes for essential supplies.
