Israel’s UN Envoy Denies Famine Warnings in Gaza
At a recent United Nations Security Council (UNSC) meeting, Israeli Ambassador Danny Danon sharply criticized reports of famine in Gaza. These reports, issued by a UN-backed food security committee, describe severe food shortages in Gaza. However, Danon dismissed the warnings as exaggerated and misleading.
Danon strongly refuted the claims of food insecurity and potential famine in Gaza, describing them as “misinformation” intended to tarnish Israel’s image. Addressing the UNSC, he labeled the report from the food security committee as dishonest.
“It is a true masterclass in misinformation, bias, and dishonest reporting,” Danon said. He argued that if examined rationally, the report’s claims would “slide to the floor, exposing the emptiness and libel hidden beneath.” Danon dismissed the report as “an exercise in slander, disguised as humanitarian concern.”
Accusations of “Slander” Against Israel
Danon went further, describing the report as one of the most “slanderous accusations” Israel has faced in the ongoing conflict. He claimed that accusations of deliberately creating famine are not only false but aimed at defaming Israel’s actions in Gaza.
The report, which outlines severe restrictions on food, water, and basic supplies for Gaza’s population, has prompted international concerns. However, Danon insisted these claims reflect a long-standing bias against Israel.
UNSC Members Demand Urgent Action
In contrast to Danon’s remarks, several UNSC members raised concerns over the situation in Gaza. They highlighted the growing food crisis as a humanitarian issue requiring immediate attention. Slovenian Ambassador Samuel Zogbar urged the UNSC to act swiftly, citing “stories of children in Gaza unable to cry due to hunger.” He described the plight of Gaza’s children as “deafening” and called for global intervention.
Guyana’s Ambassador Carolyn Rodrigues-Birkett also criticized the UNSC’s inaction, describing Gaza’s humanitarian crisis as “apocalyptic.” She attributed the worsening situation to persistent violations of international humanitarian law, calling on the council to respond decisively.
Palestinian Envoy Challenges Israel’s Account
Palestinian representatives at the UNSC meeting countered Danon’s claims, questioning why Israel restricts international journalists from entering Gaza. They argued that unbiased reporting could verify the extent of Gaza’s food shortages and help the world understand the crisis. The Palestinian envoy accused Israel of using starvation as a tool of war, advancing what he described as ethnic cleansing and colonial ambitions.
Disputed Reports on Gaza’s Humanitarian Situation
The food security committee’s report, which Danon criticized, was created by a US-backed panel focused solely on food insecurity. The committee’s findings raised alarms about Gaza’s access to essential supplies and basic nutrition. However, Israel maintains that these warnings are politically motivated.
Human rights groups and international organizations continue to report worsening living conditions in Gaza, with shortages of food, water, and medicine impacting civilians. These reports emphasize the urgent need for humanitarian assistance and protections for Gaza’s population.
