Israel Intensifies Strikes on Lebanon Amid Ceasefire Discussions

Share the latest news updates

Attacks from Israel in Lebanon, targetted Hezbollah strongholds, have escalated tensions as officials explore a U.S.-proposed ceasefire. The continued bombardment in Beirut’s southern suburbs has displaced over a million people, intensifying Lebanon’s humanitarian crisis.

Increased Attacks Targeting Hezbollah

For four consecutive days, Israeli fighter jets have struck munitions warehouses and Hezbollah infrastructure. On Friday, five buildings were flattened near Beirut’s Tayouneh area, one of the city’s busiest junctions. Israel claims these actions aim to curb Hezbollah rocket attacks and ensure the return of Israelis displaced from northern areas.

Hezbollah’s Response

Hezbollah has retaliated with rocket strikes on northern Israeli military positions, targeting soldiers in Misgav Am, Sasa, and Dishon. The group continues to battle Israeli troops near the Lebanese border, maintaining cross-border hostilities.

Diplomatic Efforts for a Ceasefire

U.S. Ambassador to Lebanon recently presented a draft ceasefire proposal to Lebanese Speaker Nabih Berri, who is endorsed by Hezbollah for negotiations. Lebanese officials, including Iranian representative Ali Larijani, are reviewing the plan. Iran has voiced support for Lebanon’s decisions in the talks, signaling a desire for resolution.

Key Sticking Points in Negotiations

Israel demands freedom to respond to future Hezbollah violations, which Lebanon rejects. Talks revolve around implementing UN Security Council Resolution 1701, which requires Hezbollah to relocate arms and fighters north of the Litani River. Lebanese leaders stress the urgency of halting Israeli aggression while prioritizing adherence to the resolution.

Humanitarian Toll and Path Forward

Since October 2023, Israeli strikes in Lebanon have killed over 3,300 people and injured more than 14,000. Despite ongoing violence, Israeli and Lebanese officials hint at progress in ceasefire discussions, with world powers urging adherence to international agreements.

The evolving conflict underscores the fragile balance between military operations and diplomatic resolutions in the region.
