Shah Rukh Khan Temporarily Quit ‘Karan Arjun’ Reveals Rakesh Roshan
Bollywood filmmaker Rakesh Roshan has revealed that Shah Rukh Khan briefly left the iconic film Karan Arjun. During an interview with an Indian media outlet, Roshan shared behind-the-scenes stories about the making of the 1995 hit, which also starred Salman Khan.
Roshan described Karan Arjun as a “social experiment” aimed at testing changing audience preferences.
He revealed that both Shah Rukh Khan and Ajay Devgn exited the project during its early stages.
“Only Ajay can answer why he backed out,” Roshan said. “Even Shah Rukh had left the film. He wanted to play the role that Ajay was playing and vice versa.”
The filmmaker refused to accommodate the stars’ desire to swap roles. “I wasn’t making this film to change their images. It was a story that required them to stay true to their characters,” he added.
Casting Changes
Following their exit, Roshan replaced Shah Rukh with Aamir Khan and Ajay Devgn with Salman Khan. However, Shah Rukh later returned.
“He had a change of heart,” Roshan said, noting that Shah Rukh initially didn’t believe in the story.
Roshan explained how the transition occurred: “I told Aamir that I had Shah Rukh’s dates for the next month, and Aamir agreed to step back.”

Bonding on Set
The director reflected fondly on the camaraderie between Shah Rukh and Salman during the shoot.
“30 years back, they were quite new to the industry,” Roshan said. “We all sat together, had lunch, and worked as a family.”
The sense of teamwork extended to the outdoor schedules, where the crew shared laughs and meals, creating a supportive environment.
