Pakistan has reshaped its cricket leadership by appointing former fast bowler Aaqib Javed as interim head coach for the white-ball team. His tenure runs until March 9, 2025, coinciding with the conclusion of the ICC Champions Trophy, which Pakistan is set to host.
Leadership Amid Change
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) announced Javed’s appointment on November 18, marking the latest shift in a tumultuous period for Pakistan cricket. Over the past two years, the team has seen five coaching changes, multiple board reshuffles, and inconsistent performances.
Javed replaces Jason Gillespie, who recently led Pakistan to a 2-1 ODI series win against Australia. However, the team suffered a disappointing 3-0 T20 series loss immediately after. Gillespie will continue as the red-ball coach and is set to oversee Pakistan’s upcoming Test series in South Africa.

Aaqib Javed’s Role
Javed, a former international fast bowler and member of Pakistan’s 1992 World Cup-winning squad, brings extensive coaching experience to the role. He is also part of the senior selection committee, which has faced frequent restructuring under PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi.
His immediate challenge is Pakistan’s white-ball tour of Zimbabwe from November 24 to December 5, featuring three ODIs and three T20Is. Following this, the team will travel to South Africa for another white-ball series starting December 10.
Road to the ICC Champions Trophy
As interim coach, Javed’s primary focus is preparing the team for the ICC Champions Trophy. Pakistan will host the tournament from February 19 to March 9, featuring eight international teams. However, India’s participation remains uncertain due to security concerns. India has proposed playing their matches at a neutral venue, but the PCB has rejected this hybrid model, insisting the entire event be held in Pakistan.
Before the Champions Trophy, Pakistan will host an ODI triangular series with South Africa and New Zealand from February 8 to February 14, providing a critical opportunity to fine-tune the squad.
Stability in Leadership
Javed’s appointment aims to bring stability to Pakistan’s cricket setup during a crucial period. His experience as both a player and coach equips him to handle the team’s challenges, including improving consistency and performance under pressure.
Mohammad Rizwan Leads the Charge
White-ball captain Mohammad Rizwan will play a pivotal role in Pakistan’s upcoming assignments. Under his leadership, the team aims to regain momentum and build a strong foundation for the Champions Trophy.
A Fresh Chapter
Aaqib Javed’s interim appointment signals a fresh chapter for Pakistan cricket. With major tournaments on the horizon, his leadership will be instrumental in shaping the team’s future. The PCB has stated that a permanent head coach will be appointed after the Champions Trophy, but for now, Javed is tasked with steering the team through a critical phase.
Pakistan fans eagerly await how this new leadership can transform their team’s fortunes on the international stage.
