Pakistan Reinforces Counterterrorism Drive at Apex Committee Meeting

Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif chaired a pivotal meeting of the Federal Apex Committee to strengthen Pakistan’s counterterrorism campaign. Attended by federal cabinet members, provincial chief ministers, Chief of Army Staff General Syed Asim Munir, and senior officials, the meeting aimed to reinvigorate strategies for tackling security challenges and bolstering national stability.

Addressing Evolving Security Threats

The meeting focused on Pakistan’s changing security landscape and outlined measures to counter terrorism, sub-nationalism, religious extremism, and disinformation campaigns. The participants highlighted the rising nexus between crime and terrorism and stressed the importance of dismantling such threats through a unified, coordinated effort.

Revitalizing National Action Plan

The committee emphasized the need for a unified political stance and a cohesive national narrative. It called for cross-party support to reinvigorate the National Action Plan (NAP) under the framework of Vision Azm-e-Istehkam. Revitalizing the National Counter Terrorism Authority (NACTA) and establishing National and Provincial Intelligence Fusion and Threat Assessment Centers were key decisions made during the session.

Adopting a Whole-of-System Approach

The committee agreed on a comprehensive “whole-of-system” approach to tackle security challenges. This strategy integrates diplomatic, political, informational, intelligence, socio-economic, and military efforts. Enhanced coordination between federal and provincial governments, as well as relevant ministries and institutions, was deemed critical for the successful execution of counterterrorism measures.

To ensure grassroots implementation, the forum decided to form District Coordination Committees under Provincial Apex Committees. These committees will oversee the execution of federal and provincial directives at the local level, ensuring seamless implementation of the counterterrorism framework.

Military Operations Against Terrorist Groups

The participants approved targeted military operations against terrorist organizations in Balochistan, including the Majeed Brigade, BLA, BLF, and BRAS. These groups have links to attacks on civilians and foreign nationals, aiming to disrupt Pakistan’s economic progress. COAS General Asim Munir reaffirmed the Army’s unwavering commitment to eliminating threats to national security and supporting the government in ensuring peace and stability.

Strengthening National Sovereignty

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif directed all stakeholders to pursue these initiatives with determination and ensure their timely execution. He stressed the importance of sustained collaboration and emphasized that protecting Pakistan’s sovereignty. Security of citizens, and fostering economic growth remain top priorities.

A Unified Path Forward

The session underscored the necessity of political resolve and national consensus in addressing Pakistan’s security challenges. By aligning efforts across political, military, and institutional fronts, the Apex Committee reaffirmed its commitment to building a safer and more stable Pakistan.

This meeting marks a decisive step in reinvigorating Pakistan’s counterterrorism strategies and ensuring long-term stability through comprehensive, coordinated action.
