Hyundai and Kia Recall Over 208,000 EVs for Power Loss Issue

Hyundai and Kia have announced a major recall of more than 208,000 electric vehicles (EVs) due to a critical power loss issue. The recall aims to address a defect in the charging control unit that could lead to a sudden loss of drive power, posing a significant safety risk. Affected Models and Issues

The recall includes over 145,000 Hyundai and Genesis vehicles. Impacted models include the Hyundai IONIQ 5, IONIQ 6, Genesis GV60, Genesis GV70, and Genesis G80. Kia has also recalled nearly 63,000 EV6 models manufactured between 2022 and 2024.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) identified the problem in the transistors within the charging control unit. These components can fail and disrupt the charging of the 12-volt battery, resulting in a complete loss of drive power. This issue significantly increases the risk of accidents and compromises driver safety.

Automakers’ Response

To resolve the problem, Hyundai and Kia dealerships will inspect the affected vehicles. They will replace the defective charging control unit and install a new fuse if necessary. Additionally, software updates will be provided to prevent future occurrences.

Importantly, owners whose vehicles were previously recalled for the same issue earlier this year will need to revisit their dealerships. This step ensures that all vehicles are comprehensively repaired and updated.

Timeline for Notification

Vehicle owners will receive notification letters from Hyundai and Kia in December and January. These letters will provide detailed instructions on scheduling repairs and addressing the issue promptly.
