The death toll in Kurram district climbed to 90 as clashes persisted on Thursday despite a ceasefire agreement. Fresh violence claimed 12 lives and left 18 injured, with sporadic gunfire reported across upper and lower Kurram, officials confirmed.

Clashes erupted between Jalmay and Chadrewal villages and Talo Kunj. In Upper Kurram, one person died in Ghozghari, where intermittent fighting continued. Violence also spread to Matasangar, Maqbal, and Kunj Alizai.

A mortar shell hit the Frontier Constabulary’s Bassu Camp in Upper Kurram, injuring two personnel.

Failed Efforts to Enforce Ceasefire

Local authorities and elders attempted to enforce the ceasefire. Deputy Commissioner Javedullah Mehsood and police raised white flags in Balesh Khel and Sangeena. Despite their efforts, trenches remained occupied due to ongoing firing.

In Lower Kurram, Assistant Commissioner Hafeezur Rehman, police officials, and local leaders worked to stop the violence in Khar Kalay and Marganaye Cheena. However, gunfire continued in Bagan, Alizai, Khar Kalay, and Baleechkhel.

Jirga and Hostage Exchange

A grand jirga, led by Kohat division officials, held talks to extend the ceasefire, originally set to end on November 30, by 10 days. As part of the agreement, warring parties exchanged hostages and released confiscated bodies.

Local elders handed over four female and one male hostage to the Kurram Militia in the presence of officials. A deceased individual’s body was also returned to their family.

Health Crisis Worsens

The ongoing violence has created a severe healthcare crisis. Dr. Qaisar Abbas, Kurram District Health Officer, reported an acute shortage of medicines in health facilities due to road closures.

National Assembly Member Hameed Hussain warned that the conflict could expand nationwide if immediate steps are not taken to end the violence.

The clashes began over a week ago when a convoy in Lower Kurram was ambushed, resulting in over 40 deaths. Violence has since spread, with efforts to mediate peace repeatedly failing.
