Pakistan’s white-ball captain, Mohammad Rizwan, has addressed the exclusion of Fakhar Zaman from the national squad for the South Africa tour. He cited health concerns as the primary reason, dismissing speculations of bias or unfair treatment. Fakhar, known for his explosive batting, is currently recovering from a viral fever.

Squad Announcement Raises Questions

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) announced the squads for the South Africa tour on December 4. The tour, set to take place from December 10 to January 7, includes three T20Is, three ODIs, and two Tests. However, Fakhar Zaman’s omission from the team once again sparked debate. The star opener, who has been absent from the central contracts and recent tours of Australia and Zimbabwe, was a noticeable exclusion.

Health Issues Behind Fakhar’s Exclusion

In a video released by the PCB, Rizwan clarified that Fakhar’s absence is not due to performance or fitness issues but because of a viral illness. “Fakhar Zaman is a game-changer for Pakistan. His absence has nothing to do with personal bias,” Rizwan stated.

The captain revealed that Fakhar’s condition requires close medical supervision. While he is unfit to travel to South Africa, he is participating in the ongoing Champions T20 Cup in Pakistan under the observation of medical staff. Rizwan added, “This isn’t about a failed fitness test. Fakhar is unwell, and it’s best for him to remain here until he recovers.”

PCB’s Support for Fakhar Zaman

Rizwan emphasized that the PCB, coaching staff, and selection committee are united in their support for Fakhar. He confirmed that regular updates on Fakhar’s condition are being shared and that his well-being is a priority. “We’ve had detailed discussions with the selection committee. Everyone wants to see Fakhar back in the national team soon,” Rizwan shared.

The PCB management has reportedly instructed doctors to monitor Fakhar closely and ensure his recovery. Rizwan assured fans that there is no animosity against the star opener, highlighting his unique role in Pakistan’s cricketing setup. “He’s a special player for Pakistan, and everyone is hopeful about his return,” the skipper added.

Fakhar’s Recent Performances

Fakhar Zaman last represented Pakistan in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 in June. Despite his absence from subsequent tours, his contributions as an aggressive opener remain highly valued. While his health concerns have sidelined him for now, Rizwan and the PCB are optimistic about his recovery and eventual comeback.

Looking Ahead

As Pakistan gears up for a challenging series in South Africa, Rizwan’s clarification underscores the team’s commitment to transparency and player welfare. Fans will eagerly await Fakhar Zaman’s recovery, hopeful to see him back in action, showcasing his match-winning abilities.
