Gaza Hospital Patients Face Starvation, Authorities Say

Sixty patients at the Indonesian Hospital in northern Gaza risk starvation as Israel’s siege worsens the humanitarian crisis. Health officials warn that the lack of food and water could lead to deaths, highlighting the dire conditions inside the besieged region.

Patients at Risk

The Ministry of Health in Gaza reported on Tuesday that 60 patients are in critical condition due to severe shortages of basic necessities. The hospital, located in Beit Lahiya, has been under an intensified siege since October, compounding challenges for medical staff and patients. Officials described the humanitarian situation as “extremely dangerous,” with the wounded suffering immensely under harsh conditions.

Rising Death Toll

In its latest update, the Health Ministry revealed that Israeli strikes killed at least 28 people and injured 54 in the past 24 hours. Multiple attacks targeted families, leaving victims trapped under rubble. Rescue operations face significant obstacles, with crews unable to access many areas.

One airstrike on a residential building in Nuseirat refugee camp killed seven Palestinians, according to reports. The ongoing conflict has claimed the lives of over 44,786 Palestinians in Gaza since the escalation began more than 14 months ago. Meanwhile, Hamas-led attacks on October 7, 2023, resulted in 1,139 Israeli deaths and the abduction of over 200 individuals.

UN Warns of Bleak Conditions

Sigrid Kaag, the United Nations’ humanitarian coordinator for Gaza, briefed the UN Security Council on the dire situation. She described conditions as “inhumane,” with civilians of all ages struggling to survive. Kaag emphasized the urgent need for a ceasefire to facilitate humanitarian aid and secure the release of hostages.

Speaking to reporters, she stressed the importance of keeping Gaza’s crisis at the forefront of international attention. Kaag also noted progress in ceasefire discussions, with negotiations focusing on a deal between Israel and Hamas.

Ceasefire Efforts Gain Momentum

Amid escalating violence, diplomatic efforts for a ceasefire continue. Qatar has played a significant role in mediation, with its officials expressing optimism about renewed talks. At the Doha Forum, Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani stated that momentum was building for a truce.

Israeli National Security Council ministers were reportedly briefed that Hamas had signaled interest in reaching a deal. These developments offer a glimmer of hope, though the situation on the ground remains critical.

Broader Regional Implications

The conflict has also drawn attention to the broader Middle East. In Syria, Israeli forces launched 480 attacks over 48 hours, targeting Syrian-controlled areas after the fall of the al-Assad regime. Israeli actions in the Golan Heights buffer zone have sparked condemnation from neighboring countries.

Despite these tensions, a separate ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon has largely held, providing a fragile sense of stability in another volatile area.

As the international community pushes for a ceasefire in Gaza, the focus remains on alleviating the immense suffering of civilians and addressing the region’s broader challenges.
