Weddings in Pakistan have always been joyous occasions, celebrated with loved ones through traditions passed down over generations. However, in recent years, the rise of extravagant weddings has introduced a new, concerning trend. With the influence of social media and the influx of wedding vloggers flaunting their wealth, the focus has shifted from the sanctity of the union to showcasing ostentation and luxury. While these grand celebrations might seem glamorous, they carry hidden costs that are social, financial, and spiritual in nature.

Social Media and the Race to Show Off

The age of social media has amplified the desire to stand out and gain attention. Influencers and wealthy families have turned weddings into multi-day spectacles, sharing every detail online. From posting pictures of designer outfits and luxurious décor to flaunting high-profile guest lists, the purpose of the event seems more about impressing strangers than celebrating love.

These influencers trend for weeks or even months, dissecting every detail of their wedding, from extravagant makeup artists to the intricate details of their dowry displays. The narrative subtly shifts from “Look at this beautiful union” to “Look at how much we can afford.” Unfortunately, this has set an unrealistic standard for the general public, leading to an unhealthy cycle of comparison and pressure.

Negative Impacts on Society

This culture of extravagance has started affecting society at large. Many middle-class and even lower-income families feel obligated to compete with these unrealistic expectations. Parents find themselves burdened with loans and debts to replicate these grand celebrations for their children. Weddings, which should symbolize joy and unity, now often cause financial strain and tension within families.

Moreover, this trend has spoiled households by creating unnecessary stress and fostering materialism. What used to be a simple occasion is now overcomplicated by events that were never part of traditional or Islamic practices.

The Contradiction with Islamic Principles

Extravagant weddings are in direct contradiction to the Islamic code of conduct, which emphasizes simplicity in marriages. Islam advocates for modest ceremonies to ensure that people from all social and economic backgrounds can partake in the blessings of marriage without financial strain. The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) himself encouraged simple weddings, stating that the most blessed weddings are those that bear the least burden.

However, in today’s era of competition, this simplicity has been replaced by unnecessary ostentation. The culture of dowry has spiraled out of control, with families feeling compelled to provide expensive gifts and luxurious setups to match societal expectations. This only deepens inequality, leaving less fortunate families feeling humiliated or burdened.

The Never-Ending List of Functions

One of the most significant changes in wedding culture has been the addition of numerous events that were previously unheard of. What was once a celebration involving a nikah and a walima has now expanded into a marathon of functions, including:

  1. Engagement Ceremony: Often as lavish as the wedding itself, this event features extravagant décor and guest lists.
  2. Baat Pakki: A relatively informal tradition that has now been turned into a mini-wedding.
  3. Bridal Shower: Borrowed from Western culture, this function has no roots in Pakistani traditions or Islam.
  4. Dholki: Once a small gathering for close family, it has become an elaborate event with themes and professional arrangements.
  5. Qawwali Night: Another imported idea that has been added to the list.
  6. Mehndi: What was once a joyful, modest celebration of song and dance has turned into a glamorous, choreographed event.
  7. Shadi and Walima: These two primary functions have become increasingly ostentatious, often overshadowed by the preceding events.

These functions, while entertaining, are not rooted in our culture or religious practices. They add unnecessary costs and complexities to what should be a simple affair, leaving families stretched thin both financially and emotionally.

Influencers and Their Role

Many social media influencers play a significant role in promoting this trend. Their lavish weddings become the benchmark for others, who feel compelled to match the extravagance despite their limited means. By showcasing designer dresses, luxury venues, and opulent gifts, these influencers inadvertently encourage a culture of materialism and excess. They fail to highlight the strain this places on ordinary families, who may go to great lengths to imitate what they see online.

While influencers may argue that they are simply sharing their joy, the reality is that their content sets unrealistic expectations. The audience, particularly the youth, becomes captivated by this false idea of what a wedding should be, losing sight of the simplicity and meaning of marriage.

A Call for Change

The need for change is urgent. Society must collectively recognize the harm caused by this trend and strive to return to simpler, more meaningful celebrations. Here are a few ways this can be achieved:

  1. Educating About Islamic Values: Religious leaders and scholars can play a vital role in reminding people of the importance of modesty and simplicity in weddings.
  2. Promoting Realistic Standards: Social media influencers and public figures can use their platforms to promote modest weddings, showcasing that love and family are what truly matter.
  3. Limiting Extravagance: Families should focus on organizing meaningful events rather than competing to outdo others. The emphasis should be on creating memories, not expenses.
  4. Discouraging Dowry Practices: Communities must collectively reject the culture of dowry and encourage practices that are inclusive for all families, regardless of their financial status.

The Way Forward

As a society, we must question why we’ve allowed weddings to become a stage for showcasing wealth rather than celebrating love and unity. We must remember that the true essence of a wedding lies in the bond between two people and their families, not in extravagant displays or social media trends.

By embracing simplicity and rejecting materialism, we can ensure that weddings remain a source of joy rather than a cause for stress and financial strain. The path forward involves reconnecting with our roots, following the principles of Islam, and prioritizing what truly matters. Only then can we create a society where weddings are celebrated for their meaning, not their price tag.
