US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has confirmed “direct contact” between the United States and Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), the Islamist rebel group that recently overthrew Bashar al-Assad’s regime in Syria. This revelation highlights a pivotal moment for Syria’s future, as international powers push for stability and unity in the war-torn nation.

HTS Rebels and International Diplomacy

HTS, previously designated a terrorist organization by the US in 2018, now finds itself at the center of diplomatic efforts. Speaking in Aqaba, Jordan, Blinken revealed ongoing communications with HTS and other factions but did not elaborate on the nature of these contacts. This development follows a meeting between US, Turkish, European, and Arab diplomats, where they collectively voiced support for a united, peaceful Syria.

Turkey’s Role and Regional Shifts

Turkey, a key player in Syria’s conflict, has reopened its embassy in Damascus, marking a significant policy shift. Turkey’s longstanding influence in northwestern Syria, including its financial and logistical support for armed groups, positions it as a major stakeholder in the country’s future.

International Calls for Stability

The United Nations special envoy for Syria, Geir Pedersen, urged world powers to ensure Syria’s state institutions do not collapse. He stressed the importance of providing humanitarian aid and supporting a stable transition.

European Union foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas, speaking from Jordan, reiterated the EU’s interest in Syria’s reconstruction. As the country’s largest aid donor, the EU aims to play a central role in rebuilding efforts, contingent on meaningful political progress.

Cautious Optimism and Lingering Challenges

The fall of Assad has sparked a mix of hope and caution. Syrians, relieved by the end of decades-long oppression, celebrated the regime’s collapse. However, concerns remain about HTS’s long-term intentions. Anwar Gargash, a UAE presidential adviser, warned that unity rhetoric must be matched by tangible actions.

The situation remains volatile. Reports from the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights revealed an ambush by loyalist remnants of the Assad regime, killing four rebel fighters on the Mediterranean coast.
