In a bid to combat growing pollution and traffic congestion, the Balochistan High Court (BHC) has suggested the introduction of electric vehicles (EVs) in Quetta’s central business district. This directive emerged during a hearing on traffic management, reflecting the court’s commitment to addressing the city’s environmental and traffic challenges.

Court Demands Urgent Solutions

A two-member bench, comprising Justice Mohammad Kamran Khan Mullahkhail and Justice Shaukat Ali Rakhshani, emphasized the urgent need for sustainable solutions to Quetta’s worsening traffic issues. The bench instructed authorities to explore innovative measures, including EV integration, and expedite actions to ensure cleaner and more organized urban mobility.

Petition Highlights Traffic Woes

The petition, filed by human rights defender Advocate Jalila Haider, brought attention to the alarming traffic mismanagement in the city. During the hearing, the executive engineer of the Communication and Works Department informed the court about the submission of a PC-I document for constructing a DSP Traffic office in Sariab. However, objections from the Planning and Development Department delayed progress, requiring responses from the relevant authorities.

Collaborative Efforts for Better Traffic Management

To streamline traffic and parking issues, the court directed the additional chief secretary to convene a meeting with key stakeholders, including the commissioner, Regional Transport Authority (RTA) chairman, administrator of MCQ, and SSP Traffic. The meeting will prioritize resolving parking challenges, particularly on Zarghoon Road and Double Road, and improving overall traffic safety measures.

Stricter Regulations for Public Transport

The RTA secretary briefed the court on ongoing efforts against illegal rickshaws and outdated buses. Transporters were given a two-month deadline to replace old vehicles with modern alternatives. The court also called for stricter enforcement of the Motor Vehicle Ordinance 1965, instructing authorities to cancel permits of transporters who fail to comply with the regulations.

EVs as a Sustainable Solution

The BHC highlighted the potential of electric vehicles to reduce congestion and pollution in Quetta’s central areas. Authorities were directed to encourage private sector participation by inviting expressions of interest. The court emphasized that EV adoption, along with shuttle services, could significantly ease traffic and environmental challenges in the city.

Progress Monitoring and Accountability

The court also referenced the cabinet-approved ‘road improvement project,’ which includes measures to enhance urban mobility. To ensure compliance, all relevant departments were instructed to submit quarterly progress reports detailing advancements in traffic management, parking solutions, and the implementation of electric vehicle initiatives.

Toward a Cleaner, Safer Quetta

The BHC’s proactive stance on introducing electric vehicles and addressing traffic congestion underscores the importance of sustainable urban planning. By fostering collaboration among stakeholders and prioritizing eco-friendly solutions, Quetta can move toward a cleaner and more efficient future.
