Barcelona: Hutchison Ports BEST has achieved two major milestones to enhance its operations and strengthen its position in the global port industry.
The first of seven new automated blocks is now operational. Once all blocks are completed by early 2025, the terminal’s yard-storage capacity will increase by 25%. This upgrade will allow the terminal to handle a higher volume of containers and meet growing global trade demands.
Guillermo Belcastro, CEO of BEST, highlighted the importance of the expansion. “This increase in operational capacity will reinforce our current high standards of service for all our customers, both on the seaside and in reception and delivery,” he said.
The automated blocks offer high speed, precision, and reliability in container handling. They optimize cargo management, reduce waiting times, and improve safety for transport companies, carriers, and shipping lines.
Two New Super Post Panamax Cranes
In another major step, BEST has signed a contract with ZPMC to acquire two new Super Post Panamax gantry cranes. These cranes will be installed in the northern section of the terminal.
The cranes will stand 55 meters tall, 10 meters higher than the current ones, making them some of the largest equipment in the Mediterranean ports. They will accommodate vessels with a beam of up to 26 containers. BEST expects the cranes to arrive in the first half of 2026.

Belcastro emphasized their strategic importance. “The addition of these state-of-the-art cranes will allow us to continue offering high-quality service and adapt to the growing demands of our customers,” he said.
