In a decisive move to restore peace in Kurram District, the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) apex committee has ordered the dismantling of all bunkers in the region. The decision comes amid ongoing tribal clashes that have killed at least 130 people and displaced many, leaving the district in turmoil. The keyword, Kurram peace efforts, underscores the government’s commitment to ending the violence and addressing the humanitarian crisis.
Weeks of Deadly Clashes Spark Action
The feud, rooted in decades-old land disputes, has caused severe shortages of food and medicine in parts of the district. Residents face growing hardships as connecting routes to Parachinar, the district’s main town, remain blocked for security reasons.
In response, Chief Minister Ali Amin Khan Gandapur chaired the apex committee meeting in Peshawar, joined by Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi and senior civil and military officials. The meeting emphasized dismantling all bunkers and confiscating heavy weapons as critical steps toward sustainable peace.
Focus on Removing Heavy Weapons
The provincial government reiterated that lasting peace is unattainable without eliminating private bunkers and heavy weaponry in the district. Officials stressed that all land routes in Kurram would reopen only after armed groups surrendered their weapons and vacated bunkers used in the clashes.
Earlier, CM Gandapur directed security forces to begin confiscating heavy weapons from locals and temporarily collect arms from areas bordering Afghanistan. This strategy aims to reduce the likelihood of further violence and restore a sense of normalcy to the troubled region.
Humanitarian Aid and Essential Supplies
The committee also addressed the pressing humanitarian needs in Kurram. It announced the timely provision of medicines and food supplies to alleviate the suffering of displaced residents. In recent days, the provincial government has used MI-17 helicopters to deliver emergency medicines and vaccines to affected areas, including a 3,600-kilogram shipment to the Sadda region.
Furthermore, CM Gandapur ordered wheat distribution at subsidized rates to assist struggling families. Officials continue to counter claims of medicine shortages, asserting that supply lines remain intact despite the ongoing conflict.

Role of the Grand Jirga
Although the jirga has yet to broker a permanent peace agreement, its ongoing efforts are seen as pivotal to resolving the crisis. The apex committee instructed a supervisory body to accelerate reconciliation efforts and ensure progress toward a lasting resolution.
Commitment to Peace and Security
Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi affirmed the federal government’s full support for enhancing the capabilities of law enforcement agencies in KP. He emphasized that establishing peace in Kurram is a top priority and pledged cooperation to achieve this goal. Both Naqvi and CM Gandapur paid tribute to security personnel who sacrificed their lives in combating terrorism, reinforcing the state’s dedication to maintaining law and order.
The dismantling of Kurram’s bunkers and confiscation of heavy weaponry mark a significant step toward peace. With a comprehensive strategy involving humanitarian aid, disarmament, and mediation, the government aims to restore stability and ensure a brighter future for the district.
