US Policies on Gaza Draw Sharp Criticism from Former Official

Share the latest news updates

The United States’ stance on Gaza has faced growing scrutiny, with former State Department official Mike Casey calling it a betrayal of American values. Highlighting the keyword “Palestinian suffering,” Casey condemned the US government for prioritizing Israel’s interests over its own, despite the escalating humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

Unprecedented Allegiance to Israel

Mike Casey, who served as deputy political counselor at the United States Office of Palestinian Affairs, described his time in Jerusalem as humiliating. He criticized the US for unwaveringly supporting Israel’s military actions, even when these actions resulted in mass casualties and widespread destruction. Casey stated, “I’ve not seen this level of compliance with any other country’s demands in my diplomatic career.”

Casey resigned in July 2024 after four years in his post, citing frustration with the Biden administration’s continued military and diplomatic backing of Israel. His resignation joins a growing list of officials speaking out against US policies since the Gaza war began in October 2023.

Devastating Toll on Gaza

The conflict in Gaza has claimed over 45,000 Palestinian lives and plunged the territory into a dire humanitarian crisis. International bodies, including the United Nations, have accused Israel of war crimes, with some experts labeling the actions as genocide. Despite this, the US has resisted using its financial and military aid to Israel as leverage to stop the war or enforce a ceasefire.

The Biden administration provides Israel with $3.8 billion in annual military aid, alongside an estimated $17.9 billion in additional assistance since the start of the conflict. Critics argue this support directly fuels the ongoing violence.

Ignoring Palestinian Voices

Casey revealed that during his tenure, his primary responsibility was reporting on Gaza’s humanitarian, economic, and political challenges. He expressed dismay that these reports, which documented widespread suffering, were largely ignored by US policymakers. “The government receives all our reporting, yet disregards it entirely,” he stated.

He further argued that the US blindly adopts Israel’s narrative, even when evidence contradicts it. “There’s no concern for Palestinian suffering. Our policies are designed to serve Israel’s interests, not our own,” Casey explained.

Calls for Policy Reform

Despite mounting civilian casualties and calls for justice, President Biden has declined to suspend weapons transfers to Israel. Advocates and human rights groups have criticized this decision, accusing the administration of enabling atrocities in Gaza. The refusal to condition aid on minimizing civilian harm has only deepened frustration among observers and officials like Casey.

A Plea for Accountability

Casey’s candid remarks highlight the urgent need for a shift in US policy toward Gaza. As international criticism grows and the humanitarian crisis worsens, many are calling for the US to balance its strategic alliances with a genuine commitment to human rights.

His resignation serves as a stark reminder that ignoring Palestinian suffering undermines not only American values but also global trust in its leadership.
