Bushra Bibi, wife of PTI founder Imran Khan, has been granted interim bail in cases linked to last month’s protests. An Islamabad district and sessions court approved her bail until January 13, 2025, against bonds of Rs50,000. The protests, which erupted on November 24, resulted in violent clashes between PTI supporters and security forces, leaving six people dead and triggering multiple legal cases against the party’s leadership.
PTI’s Nationwide Protest Call
The unrest began after Imran Khan issued a “final call” on November 13 for nationwide protests scheduled for November 24. He demanded the restoration of PTI’s electoral mandate, the release of detained party members, and the reversal of the controversial 26th Amendment. The protests escalated into chaos as PTI supporters clashed with security forces in Islamabad’s Red Zone.
By the early hours of November 27, PTI leadership and supporters retreated after intense clashes. The violence claimed six lives, including a policeman and three Rangers officials struck by a speeding vehicle. The government and PTI have since blamed each other for the casualties, further intensifying their political feud.
Legal Cases Against PTI Leaders
On December 2, the Islamabad Anti-Terrorism Court issued non-bailable arrest warrants for Imran Khan, Bushra Bibi, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur, and 93 other individuals linked to the protests. The legal scrutiny deepened on December 13 when a journalist from a foreign media outlet filed a case against Gandapur, Bushra Bibi, and other PTI leaders.
A week later, the PTI leadership, including Imran and Bushra, was charged with murder after a Rangers official succumbed to injuries sustained during the protests. These legal cases have added to the mounting challenges faced by PTI, following a series of political setbacks.
Interim Bail Granted
Bushra Bibi appeared before the Islamabad district and sessions court on Thursday alongside her legal team. Judge Shabbir Bhatti presided over the hearing on her bail applications in cases registered at the Tarnol and Ramna police stations. The court granted her interim bail until January 13, 2025, against bonds of Rs50,000.
Bushra’s legal troubles highlight the broader crackdown on PTI leaders and supporters following the violent protests. As the cases progress, they are likely to influence the political landscape and the party’s future strategies.
