Manmohan Singh, India’s former prime minister, has died at the age of 92. Current Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced his death and shared his condolences on social media. Modi described Singh as “one of India’s most distinguished leaders.”

Singh lost consciousness at his home in New Delhi on Thursday. His family rushed him to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences. Doctors attempted to revive him but were unsuccessful. The hospital declared him dead at 9:51 pm local time and later issued a statement confirming his death.

Singh served as India’s prime minister from 2004 to 2014. During his first term, he oversaw an economic boom that reshaped the nation. India emerged as a global economic powerhouse under his leadership. However, his second term saw slowing economic growth and increasing political challenges.

Despite his extensive experience, Singh had never held elected office before becoming prime minister.
