K-Electric has submitted a request to NEPRA to approve a refund of Rs. 4.98 per unit to its consumers. This refund is for overcharged electricity rates in November 2024. The company plans to return Rs. 7.179 billion to consumers in the February 2025 billing cycle.
The refund falls under the Monthly Fuel Charges Adjustment (FCA) mechanism. K-Electric is seeking NEPRA’s approval for this adjustment. The overcharged amount was calculated based on variations in fuel costs for electricity production in November.
Previously, under the FCA for September 2024, NEPRA ordered K-Electric to refund Rs. 0.1758 per unit in the December 2024 billing month. For October’s FCA, K-Electric has already committed to refunding Rs. 0.27 per unit.
NEPRA held a public hearing on December 12, 2024, regarding the earlier requests. The regulator has yet to announce its decision on those matters.
Now, K-Electric’s latest request is scheduled for a public hearing on Wednesday, January 15, 2025. NEPRA will review the proposed refund and its impact on consumers.

K-Electric’s request highlights the fluctuating costs of power generation. These adjustments are necessary to balance fuel costs and consumer tariffs. However, the proposed refund comes after concerns over high electricity charges.
This development offers some relief to K-Electric consumers, who have faced rising energy bills in recent months. The company aims to adjust the overcharged amounts promptly once approved by the regulator.
The upcoming hearing on January 15 will be critical. NEPRA’s decision will determine whether consumers can benefit from the Rs. 4.98 per unit refund in February.
Consumers and industry stakeholders are watching closely as the regulatory process unfolds.
