One in Six Children Live in Conflict Zones in 2024: UNICEF Urges Immediate Action

Share the latest news updates

A staggering 473 million children, or more than one in six, now live in conflict zones worldwide, according to UNICEF. This year, the number of children affected by violence and war has reached unprecedented levels. With ongoing conflicts in Gaza, Sudan, Ukraine, and beyond, the lives of these children are marked by trauma, displacement, and unimaginable hardship.

Rising Conflict and Displacement

The impact of war on children has never been so severe. Conflicts continue to escalate, especially in Gaza, where at least 17,492 children have died in nearly 15 months of war. In other regions, such as Sudan and Ukraine, children also face unimaginable violence and deprivation. The proportion of children living in conflict zones has doubled since the 1990s, with nearly 19% of children worldwide now affected by conflict.

UNICEF Executive Director Catherine Russell described 2024 as one of the worst years for children in conflict. “By almost every measure, 2024 has been catastrophic for children in conflict,” Russell stated. Children growing up in these areas face higher risks of being out of school, suffering malnutrition, and being forced from their homes. These factors compound the long-term damage caused by war.

The Plight of Gaza’s Children

In Gaza, the situation is dire. With winter setting in, many children are left cold, sick, and traumatized. The ongoing conflict has left 96% of women and children unable to meet their basic nutritional needs. Due to the destruction of infrastructure, essential aid has struggled to reach those in need. In addition to the immediate threats of violence, children in Gaza are also facing severe health crises, with diseases spreading rapidly and limited access to medical care.

UNICEF’s Rosalia Bollen described Gaza as one of the most heartbreaking places for humanitarians. “Every small effort to save a child’s life is undone by fierce devastation,” Bollen said. Many children in Gaza have no winter clothes and are forced to search through rubbish for food. The situation has reached a breaking point, and international political and humanitarian intervention is crucial to ensure the safety and survival of Gaza’s children.

A Surge in Violations Against Children

The conflict’s toll on children is not only physical. The number of grave violations, including killings, injuries, and sexual violence, continues to rise. In 2023, the UN verified a record 32,990 violations against children, the highest number since monitoring began. These violations are expected to increase as the year progresses, with many children in conflict zones already suffering severe psychological trauma.

In addition to the direct impacts of violence, the war has disrupted education for millions of children. Many schools are closed or destroyed, leaving children without access to learning and safe spaces. The situation has worsened malnutrition rates, particularly in places like Sudan and the Palestinian territories.

The Need for Urgent Action

UNICEF has warned that the world is failing these children, calling for immediate action to address the escalating crisis. With an increasing number of children living in conflict zones and enduring these hardships, it is clear that global leaders must prioritize their protection and well-being. As we look ahead to 2025, UNICEF urges governments and international organizations to do more to end conflicts and provide safe havens for affected children. The lives of millions are at stake, and the world cannot afford to turn a blind eye to their suffering.
