As winter ushers in the peak season for viral respiratory infections, the Ministry of Public Health (MoPH) in Qatar, in collaboration with Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) and Primary Health Care Corporation (PHCC), has called on the public to take proactive measures against illnesses like seasonal influenza (flu) and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). Preventing respiratory infections is critical to safeguarding public health, especially for high-risk groups.
Importance of Preventive Measures
Dr. Hamad Al Romaihi, Director of Health Protection and Communicable Diseases Control at MoPH, emphasized that respiratory viruses spread faster during cooler weather. He urged the public to adopt precautionary steps to reduce the risk of infection. While anyone can contract influenza or RSV, certain groups, including individuals over 50, pregnant women, young children under five, and people with chronic conditions, face a higher risk of severe illness.
Symptoms to Watch For
The symptoms of flu and RSV are similar, including fever, cough, sore throat, nasal congestion, body aches, headaches, and sometimes shortness of breath. Dr. Al Romaihi advised individuals with mild symptoms to stay home to avoid spreading the virus. Those experiencing severe symptoms, particularly from high-risk groups, should seek medical care promptly at primary healthcare centers.
Simple Steps to Prevent Infection
Dr. Abdullatif Al Khal, Head of the Infectious Diseases Division at HMC, outlined straightforward preventive measures. These include:
- Maintaining good hand hygiene by washing or sanitizing hands frequently.
- Avoiding close contact with sick individuals.
- Covering your mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing.
- Wearing masks in crowded places, especially for high-risk individuals.
He also highlighted that the viruses spread through respiratory droplets, contaminated hands, and surfaces, making hygiene and awareness essential to prevention.
Vaccination Availability and Benefits
Both influenza and RSV vaccines are now available across Qatar. Eligible individuals can receive both vaccines safely during a single visit or separate appointments. Dr. Al Khal reassured the public of the vaccines’ safety and urged high-risk groups to get vaccinated to protect themselves and their families.

Dr. Khalid Hamid Elawad, Manager of Health Protection at PHCC’s Preventive Health Directorate, noted that flu vaccines are accessible at over 90 healthcare locations, including 31 PHCC centers, HMC outpatient clinics, and more than 45 semi-governmental and private hospitals and clinics. RSV vaccines are available at all PHCC centers and HMC facilities.
The Social Responsibility of Vaccination
Dr. Elawad stressed the broader impact of vaccination, saying, “Getting vaccinated is not just about personal protection. It is about safeguarding your family, friends, and the community.” He encouraged residents to take advantage of free vaccine availability and highlighted the importance of protecting vulnerable populations.
As respiratory viruses continue to pose a significant threat during winter, the combined efforts of healthcare institutions and public vigilance remain vital in preventing the spread of these infections.
