A staggering number of women and children in Pakistan face severe vitamin deficiencies, impacting their overall health and well-being. Addressing these deficiencies, experts stress the urgent need for fortified edible oils to combat widespread shortages of essential nutrients like vitamins A and D.
Alarming Statistics Highlight Micronutrient Deficiencies
Over 50% of women and children in Pakistan suffer from micronutrient deficiencies, with iron, vitamin A, and vitamin D leading the list. Dr. Emreen Sarwar, District Coordinator of the Integrated Reproductive Maternal Newborn Child Health (IRMNCH) and Nutrition Programme, shed light on this growing crisis during an awareness session for health supervisors and workers in Jhang.
The session revealed concerning data: approximately 9.9 million Pakistanis face bone mineral density issues. Women make up 7.2 million of these cases, emphasizing a pressing need for immediate interventions to prevent long-term complications.
The Role of Fortified Edible Oils
Experts at the session highlighted the critical role fortified edible oils play in addressing vitamin deficiencies. Adding essential nutrients like vitamins A and D to commonly used oils can significantly reduce deficiency rates. Health workers learned how fortification could serve as a cost-effective and accessible solution for vulnerable populations, especially in rural areas.

Educating Health Workers for Broader Impact
Over 30 lady health supervisors and workers attended the session, designed to equip them with the knowledge and tools to spread awareness at the grassroots level. Dr. Sarwar emphasized the importance of empowering health workers to educate families about nutrition and the benefits of fortified foods.
Participants were also trained to identify symptoms of nutrient deficiencies and guide families toward adopting healthier dietary practices. These efforts aim to build community-level awareness, creating a ripple effect in addressing deficiencies across the district.
Vitamin Deficiencies and Public Health
Vitamin A and D deficiencies can lead to severe health issues, including weakened immune systems, poor bone health, and increased susceptibility to infections. Children and women, particularly pregnant and lactating mothers, face the highest risk. Addressing these deficiencies requires a multi-pronged approach, combining fortified foods, education, and improved access to healthcare.
Dr. Sarwar emphasized that awareness campaigns and accessible solutions like fortified oils are essential to combating this crisis. She urged policymakers and health authorities to expand fortification programs across Pakistan to ensure vulnerable populations receive adequate nutrition.
A Path Forward
This initiative marks a critical step in addressing Pakistan’s growing micronutrient crisis. Educating health workers and encouraging the use of fortified oils can significantly improve public health outcomes. With concerted efforts, the country can work toward reducing deficiencies and ensuring healthier futures for its women and children.
