ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif plans to expand his cabinet by inducting four to five new ministers next week.

Dr. Tauqir Shah, a close confidant of PM Shehbaz, is expected to join the cabinet. He previously served as principal secretary to the PM. Currently working with the World Bank, Dr. Tauqir is visiting Pakistan on the PM’s request.

Other likely candidates include Hanif Abbasi, Tariq Fazal Chaudhry, Barrister Aqeel Malik, and Talal Chaudhry. Barrister Malik, speaking from abroad, confirmed his selection but was unsure of his portfolio. Sources also indicated that Tariq Fazal Chaudhry is under consideration.

Senator Khalil Tahir Sindhu and Ikhtiar Wali are reportedly being considered as well.

PM Shehbaz hinted at reshuffling portfolios during the last parliamentary meeting of PML-N. Information Minister Attaullah Tarar’s portfolio is expected to change.

The PM reiterated that cabinet members are not receiving salaries or perks under austerity measures.

Cabinet Meeting Highlights

While chairing a cabinet meeting, PM Shehbaz announced Pakistan had achieved economic stability. He stressed the need for export-led growth.

He shared that remittances hit $15 billion in the first five months of the fiscal year. The government aims to reach $35 billion by the fiscal year’s end.

The PM praised his economic team for collecting an additional Rs72 billion under the advance-to-tax ratio scheme. The government is close to meeting its December tax revenue target.

The PM acknowledged $6 million in funding from the Bill Gates Foundation. This initiative aims to digitize the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR). Initial results show container inspection times have decreased by 39%, while businesses received 89% relief.

PM Shehbaz highlighted Pakistan’s role as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council. He termed it a major diplomatic achievement.

Approvals and Legislation

The cabinet approved amendments to Section 3(7) of the Pakistan Telecommunication (Reorganization) Act. Approval was given for appointing Information Group officers as press officers at diplomatic missions. The cabinet approved the registration of Liaquat University of Medical and Health Sciences, Thatta.

The cabinet reconstituted a committee to regulate the prices of life-saving medical equipment. This step followed a Supreme Court judgment. The cabinet approved sending the National Food Safety, Animal and Plant Health Authority Bill to parliament.

The cabinet ratified decisions made by the Economic Coordination Committee on December 18. It also approved recommendations from the Cabinet Committee on State-Owned Enterprises made on December 24.

PM Shehbaz is expected to meet the new cabinet members before their induction.
