Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur has claimed that terrorist incidents have significantly increased since the removal of Imran Khan’s government. Speaking to the media in Islamabad, he criticized federal policies and emphasized the urgent need to address rising security challenges, including terrorism.
Post-Imran Khan Era and Rising Terrorism
CM Gandapur stated that the fall of Imran Khan’s administration in April 2022 through a no-confidence vote marked a turning point for Pakistan’s security. “Terrorist activities have surged since Imran Khan’s government ended. Misguided federal policies are to blame,” he asserted.
He stressed that better coordination with Afghanistan, especially through tribal jirgas, could improve cross-border relations.

Challenges in Border Security
The chief minister pointed out that managing security in border regions remains the responsibility of the federal government and the military. He criticized the lack of effective results from military operations in the merged tribal districts. Gandapur called for alternative strategies, highlighting the limitations of past efforts.
He reiterated his government’s commitment to peace and pledged to explore innovative ways to combat terrorism. He also stressed the need for a commission to investigate the events of May 9, reflecting on broader governance issues.
Counter-Terrorism Achievements in 2024
Despite challenges, Pakistan achieved notable success in counter-terrorism operations in 2024. Security forces conducted 59,775 intelligence-based operations nationwide, neutralizing 925 terrorists. Among those killed, 73 were high-value targets, including notorious figures like Fida Rahman and Abu Yahya.
The operations disrupted terrorist networks and dismantled key support systems. Authorities apprehended hundreds of individuals involved in extremist activities. Daily operations, averaging 169 per day, targeted hideouts, training camps, and facilitators, demonstrating Pakistan’s relentless commitment to security.
Improved Coordination and Strategic Efforts
The effectiveness of these operations can be credited to improved coordination between the military, intelligence agencies, police, and other law enforcement bodies. Army Chief General Asim Munir highlighted the importance of addressing terrorism’s roots, particularly threats emanating from neighboring Afghanistan.
Pakistan also cracked down on illegal activities supporting terrorism, such as smuggling, extortion, and electricity theft. These efforts weakened the operational capacity of terrorist groups and curbed financial support for their activities.
Strengthened International Relations
In 2024, Pakistan’s military diplomacy gained momentum. High-level engagements, including hosting the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) conference, enhanced Pakistan’s standing on the global stage. Strengthened ties with nations like China, Russia, and Iran reinforced its influence in international security dialogues.
Additionally, Pakistan’s firm stance on regional issues, including Gaza, Lebanon, and Kashmir, positioned the country as a strong advocate for oppressed populations.
Future Prospects for Security
CM Gandapur’s remarks underscore the urgent need for strategic and inclusive measures to counter terrorism. With rising challenges and notable achievements in 2024, Pakistan must remain vigilant and committed to fostering peace and stability across the nation.
