ISLAMABAD: Tensions between the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) and the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) escalated on Sunday. PPP leader Shazia Marri issued a stern warning to the PML-N-led government. The PPP criticized the federal government for establishing the Pakistan Maritime and Seaport Authority (PMSA) without consultation.
Shazia Marri reminded Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif that the government depends on PPP’s support for survival.
“The day we withdraw support, this government will collapse,” she warned. She added that the government’s disregard for allies could lead to serious consequences.
PPP Kept in the Dark
Shazia Marri revealed that the PPP and Sindh government were excluded from discussions about the PMSA. “Both the Sindh government and the PPP were kept in the dark about this decision,” she claimed.
She also criticized the federal government for violating constitutional protocols. She noted that the Council of Common Interests (CCI) had not convened for 11 months, despite being constitutionally required to meet every three months.
“The establishment of the Maritime and Seaport Authority should have been discussed in the CCI,” she said. She accused the government of bypassing constitutional processes on critical national matters.
Demand for Constitutional Governance
Marri emphasized the need for constitutional and legal principles in governance. She urged the government to consult allies and provinces before making key decisions.
“It would be better for everyone if the country is run on constitutional and legal principles,” she stated.
Federal Government Responds
Maritime Affairs Minister Qaisar Ahmed Sheikh dismissed PPP’s claims. He said the PPP leadership, including Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah, was consulted.
“I have already discussed the PMSA issue with Murad Ali Shah,” Sheikh said. He added that PPP representatives Mehreen Bhutto and Asad Niazi worked with him on the matter.
He reassured that the Sindh government would remain informed about PMSA developments. “A task force, including all stakeholders, has been formed for this purpose,” he added.

Growing Discord Between PPP and PML-N
This issue adds to the already growing discord between the PPP and PML-N. The PPP has repeatedly criticized the federal government for sidelining allies and provinces.
Other disputes include internet restrictions, which PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari called an attempt at censorship. PPP lawmakers have also protested in parliament over the absence of federal ministers.
Despite the rising tensions, Bilawal urged continued dialogue with the federal government.
Common Enemy May Force Collaboration
Observers believe that the PPP and PML-N may still collaborate to counter their common adversary, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan. The establishment’s backing of the coalition is also seen as a key factor in holding the alliance together.
The disagreements, however, signal deep cracks in the alliance, with the PPP publicly expressing dissatisfaction with the federal government’s approach. The coming days will reveal whether these tensions will subside or lead to a political rift.
