Karachi’s Intermediate Part 1 results have sparked fresh protests, with students and parents demanding clarity. The controversy has deepened as a female student from a local girls’ college has been declared failed in all her papers, despite excelling in matriculation. The issue has once again raised questions about the fairness and transparency of the examination system.
Shocking Results for a Top Scorer
Shagufta Alam, a student from Government Degree Girls College in Orangi Town, was stunned when she received her results. Despite securing an impressive 82.73% with an A-1 grade in matriculation, she was declared failed in all her Pre-Medical papers. This drastic outcome has left her and her family bewildered.
Shagufta has expressed her dissatisfaction with the checking system. She has called for a thorough re-evaluation of her papers, accusing the current system of being flawed. Her case is not isolated, as many other students with similar academic backgrounds have also faced inexplicable results. Students who once excelled are now receiving lower grades, sparking frustration and confusion.
Board’s Response to Complaints
In response to the growing protests, the Intermediate Board administration has outlined a procedure for students to challenge their results. The board has advised candidates to submit a scrutiny form if they believe there has been an error in the marking process. According to the board, the answer sheets will be rechecked transparently in the presence of the relevant subject professor. Furthermore, candidates may also view their answer sheets in the presence of their parents to ensure fairness.
The board’s assurance of a transparent review process comes after widespread criticism of its handling of previous examinations. However, many students remain skeptical, fearing that the process will not be thorough enough to address their concerns.

Board Chairman Blames Students for Low Marks
The ongoing controversy has also led to changes in the leadership of the Intermediate Board. After months of protests and criticism, the board’s chairman was removed. Sharf Ali Shah, the chairman of the Matriculation Board, was appointed as the acting chairman of the Intermediate Board.
In a recent media interview, Shah attributed the low marks in the Intermediate exams to the students themselves. He claimed that the curriculum had changed in the past two years, and many students were not attending classes regularly. He further alleged that students were not taking the exams seriously, citing examples of students writing song lyrics instead of answering the questions. Shah stated that teachers often had to mark such papers without giving them proper attention. His remarks have sparked further outrage, with many students and parents blaming the board for its inability to handle the situation effectively.
The controversy surrounding this year’s results mirrors the issues faced by students in previous years. The pass percentage for Pre-Medical students was 33%, while Pre-Engineering students had a pass rate of just 29%. These low figures have raised questions about the effectiveness of the examination system and its ability to assess students fairly.
