Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab has taken a significant step to address public safety by launching a helpline for reporting missing manhole covers. With safety being a top priority, this initiative allows residents to alert authorities promptly, ensuring quicker resolutions and reducing risks posed by open manholes.
Dedicated Helpline for Quick Action
The newly established helpline, 1334, enables Karachi residents to report missing or open manhole covers directly. The Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation (KWSC) has assured citizens of immediate action upon receiving complaints. The hotline aims to streamline the reporting process and enhance the city’s response to such hazards.
Commitment to Public Safety
Mayor Wahab emphasized that no effort would be spared in providing manhole covers to safeguard the city’s residents. Last year, 71,000 covers were installed across various neighborhoods, reflecting the administration’s commitment to improving infrastructure. He reiterated that protecting lives remains the primary responsibility of the city’s administration.
Tragic Incident Sparks Action
The helpline’s launch comes in the wake of a tragic incident on January 5, 2024, when an 8-year-old boy in Shah Faisal Colony fell into an open manhole and lost his life. This heartbreaking event underscored the urgency of addressing such dangers and prompted the mayor to accelerate safety measures.

By creating a direct line of communication, the initiative encourages community involvement and ensures collective responsibility in preventing future tragedies.
Looking Ahead
As the city continues to address infrastructure challenges, initiatives like the manhole helpline highlight a proactive approach to urban management. Mayor Wahab’s commitment to public safety reflects a broader vision of making Karachi a safer and more livable city for its residents. Through collaborative efforts and efficient systems, Karachi is moving toward creating a secure environment for all its citizens.
