PCB Confident in Hosting Champions Trophy 2025

Share the latest news updates

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) remains confident in hosting the Champions Trophy 2025 in Pakistan, despite speculation about a possible venue shift due to delays in stadium renovations. A PCB official assured that all preparations, including renovation work at key venues, will be completed by the first week of February, ensuring the tournament proceeds as planned.

Renovation Progress and Deadlines

Renovation work began in August 2024 and was initially set to conclude by December 31. However, some delays raised concerns, prompting reports that the International Cricket Council (ICC) might inspect the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium, Lahore’s Gaddafi Stadium, and Karachi’s National Bank Stadium. If these venues are not ready for handover by February 12, the tournament could potentially shift to the UAE.

The PCB dismissed these rumors, with an official emphasizing their commitment to completing the work on time. “All the work will be done by the first week of February. Pakistan will successfully host the Champions Trophy. There is no need to entertain rumors,” the official said.

Tournament Details

The Champions Trophy, featuring eight teams and 15 matches, is scheduled to kick off on February 19 and conclude on March 9. The group-stage matches will take place across Rawalpindi, Lahore, and Karachi. Notably, this marks Pakistan’s first time hosting an ICC event since the 1996 ODI World Cup, a milestone for the nation’s cricketing history.

Preparations and Strategic Moves

To ensure readiness for the Champions Trophy, the PCB has already relocated next month’s ODI tri-series, involving South Africa and New Zealand, from Multan to Karachi and Lahore. This decision aligns with the advanced stage of preparations at Gaddafi Stadium and National Bank Stadium, which are set to host six of the 12 group-stage matches for the Champions Trophy.

Both venues are undergoing extensive upgrades. At Gaddafi Stadium, spectator capacity has been expanded to 35,000 with the installation of new seating. Additionally, 480 state-of-the-art LED lights have been added to enhance broadcast quality. Similarly, the National Bank Stadium in Karachi now features upgraded hospitality enclosures and improved lighting to meet international standards.

Defending Pakistan’s Image

The PCB official also addressed misinformation circulating on social media, claiming certain individuals aim to tarnish Pakistan’s image. “We are committed to giving our best. There are people trying to discredit Pakistan, but we know their intentions,” the official remarked.

Looking Ahead

As Pakistan gears up to host the Champions Trophy, the PCB remains steadfast in its resolve to deliver a successful tournament. With key renovations nearing completion and confidence in their preparations, the nation is set to reintroduce itself as a hub for international cricket. This historic event offers an opportunity for Pakistan to showcase its capabilities and passion for the sport on a global stage.
