Maulana Fazlur Rehman, leader of Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F), has openly criticized the establishment for prioritizing authority over moral principles. Speaking at a press conference in Karachi, the veteran politician highlighted how the establishment’s focus on retaining power undermines democracy, constitutional values, and public trust.
The Establishment’s Political Role
Fazl questioned the establishment’s claim of being apolitical, calling it inherently political. He remarked, “Even martial law regimes have completed their terms in power, proving that their ultimate goal is to maintain authority.” Criticizing electoral interference, he alleged, “They manipulated results to ensure the victory of a candidate who couldn’t even win a single polling station.” Such practices, he said, mock the sanctity of democracy and erode public confidence in the system.
Criticism of Political Leaders
Fazl expressed disappointment with politicians who, in his view, compromise democratic norms for personal gain. “Our grievances extend to leaders who neglect constitutional principles for their vested interests,” he stated. His remarks come amid allegations of manipulation in the recent by-election for the Balochistan Assembly’s PB-45 constituency, where JUI-F’s candidate secured third place.

Emphasis on National Consensus
Calling for unity, Fazl stressed the importance of consensus to address the nation’s challenges. “We must improve the current system collectively and resolve issues through mutual understanding,” he said. He also spoke about educational reforms, highlighting the importance of balancing regulation with the autonomy of madrassas.
Madrassa Reforms and Legislation
Acknowledging the existing legislation to regulate madrassas, Fazl noted that relief had been provided in their registration through a presidential ordinance. While he supported the reforms, he emphasized the need to respect the independence of these institutions. “We do not oppose reforms but insist that they protect the autonomy of madrassas,” he added.
Comments on Economy and Personal Relations
Touching upon economic transparency, Fazl urged the government to reveal the true state of the country’s financial condition. On a lighter note, he mentioned his cordial relationship with Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, describing their recent meeting as personal. Additionally, he took a jibe at Education Minister Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui, humorously noting that the minister often visits him to “study various issues.”
Upholding Democracy
Fazlur Rehman’s remarks underline his dissatisfaction with both the establishment and political leaders. By calling out electoral interference and demanding transparency in governance, he emphasized the need to uphold democratic principles. As the nation navigates its political and economic challenges, Fazl’s call for unity and reform resonates as a critical message for stakeholders.
