In a significant move against terrorism, five militants were eliminated in an intelligence-based operation (IBO) in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Tirah Valley on Friday. According to the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), the operation targeted a group of terrorists based on reliable intelligence reports. Among those killed was ringleader Abidullah, also known as Turab, who had been involved in numerous attacks against security forces and civilians. This decisive operation underscores Pakistan’s unwavering commitment to eradicating terrorism.
Details of the Operation
Security forces conducted the operation in Tirah, engaging the terrorists in a fierce exchange. Five militants were killed, and one was captured. Weapons and ammunition were recovered from the site, highlighting the group’s capacity for violence. According to the ISPR, these individuals were responsible for multiple terrorist acts in the region, including attacks on civilians.
A sanitization effort is ongoing to ensure no further militants remain in the area. The military emphasized its resolve to continue these operations until the region is entirely free of terrorist activity.

Recent Security Context in Tirah
The security situation in Tirah Valley has been a focal point for the military. Since December 14, security forces have conducted multiple IBOs in the region, killing 22 terrorists and injuring 18 others. The operations are part of a broader effort to restore peace in an area that has recently seen an increase in terrorist activity.
In recent months, armed militants have been reported taking refuge in hilly terrains and abandoned homes in Tirah Valley. While the situation in parts of the valley has calmed, some terrorists are believed to have relocated to Afghanistan or nearby districts.
Rise in Terrorist Activities
Pakistan has witnessed a resurgence in terrorist incidents, particularly in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan. This uptick followed the breakdown of a ceasefire agreement with the banned Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) in 2022. The year 2024 proved particularly deadly, with 444 terror attacks leading to the deaths of 685 security personnel. According to the Centre for Research and Security Studies, this marked the highest toll on security forces in a decade.
Despite the challenges, security forces conducted over 59,000 operations in 2024. These efforts resulted in the elimination of 925 terrorists, though they also cost the lives of 383 officers and soldiers.
Restoring Peace in the Region
The ISPR reaffirmed the military’s commitment to eliminating terrorism. It stated that the operations in Tirah would continue until peace is fully restored. With armed militants gradually moving away from key areas, efforts to secure the valley and its surroundings have intensified.
As Pakistan battles the renewed threat of terrorism, such operations reflect the nation’s determination to ensure security and stability for its citizens. The success in Tirah is a step forward in the broader fight against extremism.
